Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Tayy.
DJ, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a musician and have been since I was in middle school. While attending Miami Southridge Senior High, I started going to a lot of parties with my friends. We would go to these parties and pretty much turn it up and make sure that everyone was having fun and enjoying themselves. One day we sat down and said, you know what? We should throw our own parties and call ourselves LooseENT (s/o to Loose, Digg & Dookie) and that’s how DJ Tayy was born.
When I graduated, I then moved to Tampa to attend the University of South Florida, where I decided to take djing seriously. Back when I first started, I didn’t even have a laptop, so I had to borrow Dookie’s laptop for parties and would even sometimes make CD’s on my home computer to pop in at the party. In 2009/2010 I purchased my first pair of turntables and watched YouTube videos on how to use em. I’m sure I drove my roommates crazy, especially Jorgelina lol.
Eventually, one of my roommates, Ashley, got me my first regular gig at a club called Kush at the time. After that, the rest is history. I eventually started djing at clubs and malls, even on campus for various events and in 2016, I started working as a dj for Carnival Cruise Lines.
Has it been a smooth road?
It was definitely NOT easy for me. I am so tiny and very much to myself, so people didn’t and sometimes still don’t really take me seriously. I’d say I’m the dj and they’d kind of shrug and be like yeah, ok lol. I’d say the biggest struggle I’ve faced was moving to a new city where I didn’t know anyone as an 18 year old young lady and having to build. That in itself is one hell of a struggle. Going to school full time, not having a car, working various jobs while trying to get my name out there on my own. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, though. It made me who I am today.
Please tell us about your music.
I am a DJ who provides fun and entertainment for various events and occasions. I specialize in creativity, fun and mixing my ass off and being known as one of the now many popular female DJ’s in South Florida. What I’m proud of the most is being in business so long and being able to support myself, thanks to my friends and supporters. They’re really the ones who keep me going. What sets me apart from others is my skill set, style and my hard work and consistency.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next five to ten years, there will probably be some shift within the industry. While I think there will ALWAYS be a need for the DJ, I do see companies, like radio, switching over to computers to get the job done. Also, because any/everyone has access to dj apps, I also see it being very competitive like it already is, but that is where the hard work comes in.
