Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Citizen Jane.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Music has the power to unite people and that is something that I have harnessed to forge a personal and professional mission. The beginnings of my music journey started as a musician and lead singer of an all-girl band. I play guitar, bass, cajón, percussion, and dabble with the keyboard when I have to song write and compose. I have a background of musicians in my family that goes all the way back to my Cuban ancestors. After my all-girl band broke up I joined a Spanish Rock band and we recorded a CD of which our hit single, “Amor, Expresión y Tú” Music Video can still be found on YouTube.
It’s a sultry ballad whose lyrics could be left to your interpretation. The band eventually broke up after many years and I was asked to be on a TV Show on Telemundo called “Letra y Música” that aired every Friday on prime time. Eventually, I started getting back to my interest in DJing, something that I had done locally as a side job to make money for College. Eventually, I started getting more noticeable in the Nightclub Scene and began getting booked in and out of the country. That is when I decided to make it a full-time job and left my Corporate Job to pursue my DJ Career. I have been doing it now for full time for seven years and I have been very successful.
Breaking through the subtle music barriers between several diverse groups is what has allowed me to be one of the most in-demand female DJ’s in the industry. I have had the opportunity to Headline at some of the major music festivals all over the world including Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia and Madison Square Garden among so many others. I won the Pink Flamingo Award for Best DJ, three Years in a row. This award is solely voted for by the people so it was such an honor to me. I’ve managed to keep my versatile appeal thanks to my innate belief that differences can be transcended through music. “Music makes people come together, no matter what race, color, gender, or sexual orientation”.
I’m now turning my full attention to my first love in music, (Singing & Song Writing) Last summer 2019 I released the first single off my EP “Rescue Me” Featuring Brazilian International DJ Tommy Love, which is on all digital platforms including iTunes and Spotify. My EP will be released this summer and a special duet project is in the works as well. 2020 is going to be a very busy & successful year. I’m super excited about everything that’s creatively cooking.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road since this is really a predominant man lead world. But I have managed to break through the glass ceiling and set a tone for many females that want to be DJs. I love collaborating with other DJ’s and learning from them as well as sharing best practices and techniques. it’s all about empowering other women in the industry and standing together as a team. The more we are the more doors that will open for us in the future.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I’m an International DJ, Singer, Song Writer, Musician, Producer. What makes me stand out is that I play for the people, I read the crowds. I know what I have to deliver for each event to make them happy. I put all my love for music into it for my crowd. I switch up my style depending on the event.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is related to music. Music has always been my first love and to be quite frank, it’s actually the love of my life. I used to line up my stuffed animals as my audience and grab my Mom’s hairbrush as my microphone and my Tennis racket as my guitar and I used to sing for them. That used to make me so happy.
