Meet Diego Bonilla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Bonilla.

Hi Diego, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello Everyone, Im Diego Bonilla. I am originally from Colombia and grew up here in Florida. I’ve been here since the age of 10 and now 32.

The way I got started with videography and photography goes back to my early skateboarder days.

I always loved to see skate videos and look through magazines to see all the amazing photography of skateboarding there was and wondered wow it would be awesome to be able to do that one day. I also always had a creative side to me that just needed to be developed more.

I remember I got my first video camera when I was probably 15 years old and would love just to go and film me and my friends at the time skating in front of my house or when we would go to the skatepark I would try and imitate what Id see in skateboard videos, It was always a lot of fun.

My graphic design and photography really took off during my college years when I was taking my courses. I took one photography class that required me to have a DSLR camera and that really just got me. After learning the basics, I would just love going out to take pictures of anything at first then of course being my skater self I would go to the skatepark and try and get good at taking action shots.

When my local skate park Drop In Action Sports Complex opened its doors officially in 2014, I would always take pictures and film videos with my DSLR of events at the park. I would also do montages to really showcase the park to others which really helped get the park noticed by other people and over the years get a lot more clients coming through.

After I finished college and learned a lot about graphic design, I would apply that to the skatepark business branding, social media, and website I helped design. I remember we went through 3 different website versions until we stuck with the one we use until this day.

Over the years after college, I got more into photography and videography. Anytime there is an event or I come up with some idea to try and do for practice, go for it. Little by little keep pushing myself to get better. Even today, 6 years later. I am pretty good but still have a few areas to master. It never ends ha.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My career path was not always easy. In high school let’s just say I was an easy-going student. I was no honor roll or A student with top grades. I just wanted to get by and move on, however, I had to do it.

When I got to college, my original intent was to do Business Administration because I had a dream to open up my own skateboard business one day but when I got into the course I realized it was not for me.

I wanted something a bit more hands-on and creative, hence graphic design. So I went on to simply get an Associate’s degree and then transferred to another College called Digital Media Arts College which is where I really took things more seriously.

My mindset was always a bit rigid so when I first started my graphic design studies, it was a struggle at first to open up my mind more but after a while, I started to really see things in a more creative fashion.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My main areas of expertise are videography, photography, and social media content creation. I really enjoy what I do because of just the overall freedom you get to come up with a concept then after dedicating time to make it into reality, it’s a feeling like no other.

Over the years, I went from just being a graphic designer to more of a content creator when I mixed in my video and photo side of things. I’m always getting inspired by other artists out there and learning new techniques to do things better and uniquely.

My most proud work is hard to say because there is a lot out there I’ve done in my line of work but I’d have to say at the top would be the development of Drop In Action Sports Complex from its early stages to where it is now. I contributed a lot in terms of enhancements, branding, social media marketing, website, event planning, etc.

And still, donate some time today. The other would be some client work I’ve done for local businesses to really help them out to get more clients.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
My determination to get things done right and top-notch.
