Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Nugent.

Desiree Nugent was born in St Thomas, Virgin Islands. She moved to Miami, Florida at the age of one. In which she grew up in Carol City, now known as Miami Gardens. Desiree attended Miami Norland Senior High School. Moving forward, Desiree went off the attend Florida A&M University majoring in Nursing. She maintained her focus and determination by furthering her education and completing her Master’s in Nursing Education at the University of Phoenix.
Continuing her education, Desiree went on to complete her degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner graduating from the University of Miami. Double Mastered! Desiree is a loving mother to two beautiful boys and an amazing wife to her awesome husband. In the year of 2018, she founded Healing Hands Medical Centers.
Healing Hands Medical Centers was established based on Desiree’s acknowledgement of the need for the local community. She understands the need of medical knowledge regarding major health issues. HHMC offers affordable monthly payment plans for those without health insurance. Desiree understands the significance of primary prevention which includes education of chronic diseases. Therefore, giving the community a fair chance at a healthier lifestyle, this will decrease the rate of morbidity and mortality.
Has it been a smooth road?
In the beginning, it was a challenge as starting a business with no knowledge of how to do so, I had to learn as I go. The major obstacle was funding, in which I spent every dime of my savings in order to make the business a success. You always here of first year in business challenges, and that is not an understatement.
Getting patients in the door was not an easy task, as a matter of fact, it can still be challenging. Healthcare needs is a must in our society, as it is not so much affordable. If individuals know where they can go for affordable healthcare needs, I’m sure they will buy-in. The second part of that is being educated to know the importance of following up with your health, as primary prevention is the key.
Please tell us more about your work. What do you do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?
When first established in 2018 the primary focus was the specialization in Hypertension and Diabetes management. However, we have now opened up to a full Primary Office and continue to specialize in Hypertension and Diabetes. Both hypertension and diabetes may have some underlying causes in common, and they share some risk factors. They also contribute to a worsening of each other’s symptoms. The ways of managing both conditions also overlap.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. For this reason, I decided to choose Miami Gardens, the city that I grew up in, giving back to my community the options of affordable primary health care services. HHMC gives options to pay on a monthly basis, under an annual agreement an affordable price for individuals and families.
What makes me different from the rest? I’m not a physician, I am an African American female Nurse Practitioner in the city of Miami Gardens, that takes her time with her patients to help them understand their body and purpose of preventing and treating health conditions.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The city of Miami Gardens has done a lot of growing over the past years in beautification. Although the city has grown, the people remain the same. And the need for small businesses are on the rise. So I would definitely recommend medical businesses, the more the better for the community. However, the support from local city leaders should support the small businesses more.
