Meet Daniel Pradilla of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Pradilla.

Hi Daniel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Mine is the story of a family that moved from Colombia to Miami back in 2000. I’m the second of four brothers, raised by wonderful parents who worked hard and always encouraged us to follow our dreams.

My career started right here in South Florida as a graphic designer. A few years later, I moved to San Francisco, where I earned my MFA in Advertising. Since then, life and work have taken me from Miami to Milwaukee, San Francisco, and Boulder—and eventually back home.

My wife and I recently moved back to Miami, and it feels great to be here again. These days, I continue doing what I love: pushing ideas, building brands, and collaborating with local, national, and international clients as a freelance Creative Director.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Never. And I think that’s what makes the journey more special.

First of all, I didn’t speak a word of English when I moved to this country, so learning the language became my main focus for the first couple of years. I’m the type of person who thrives on challenges, and I’ve always tried to learn from whatever curveballs life throws my way.

Right after graduating as a graphic designer, I realized I actually wanted to go into advertising. That meant starting over, rebuilding my portfolio, and taking a completely different path. It was a big change early in my career, and definitely a scary one, but it turned out to be the right move.

Being a creative in advertising also means spending your days solving problems and jumping over all kinds of obstacles. Funny enough, that’s probably the part I enjoy the most. Every project comes with a different challenge, and I get to use my experience, knowledge, and creativity to find a solution that works for my clients.

I guess I’ve learned that obstacles aren’t necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes they’re what push you in a better direction.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a Creative Director with 20 years of experience in advertising, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s top agencies, collaborating with global brands, Fortune 500 companies, celebrities, and professional athletes. Along the way, I’ve created campaigns for Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Amazon, Walmart, Domino’s, KitKat, Under Armour, and many others.

My experience ranges from building brands and launching new products to creating campaigns that connect with people and deliver measurable results. I’m fluent in English and Spanish, and I’ve produced work across the Americas, from Alaska to Montevideo, for both general and Hispanic markets in the U.S. and Canada.

There are a lot of campaigns in my portfolio that I’m proud of, but the project that means the most to me is a very personal one: a book I wrote and designed about my mom’s life. She died of a brain aneurysm when I was 15, and I spent almost two decades grieving without professional help. Years later, I realized I was starting to forget some aspects about her life, and that scared me. So I started writing down every memory I could remember.

That simple list eventually became a book.

For seven years, I wrote more than 40 stories, interviewed nearly everyone who was close to her, collected photographs and memories, and turned it all into a 340+ page book celebrating her life. It was challenging, emotional, and at times incredibly difficult to work on, but it became the most rewarding personal project of my life.

More than a book, it became part of my healing process. It helped me reconnect with my mom, preserve her story, and finally come to terms with losing her. You can learn more about it here, https://www.danielpradilla.com/lili

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I have to admit, I’ve taken my fair share of unnecessary risks in life, like drinking a bunch of gasoline when I was two, or jumping out of a plane when I was 30. Thankfully, my decision-making has improved quite a bit since then.

But life has also taught me the importance of taking calculated risks. Like asking out that girl who eventually becomes your wife. Or deciding to switch careers the minute you graduate and basically starting all over again.

Taking risks is scary. I think it’s supposed to be. But that’s also part of what makes life interesting. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of looking back and realizing that the risk you were terrified to take completely paid off.

As my grandpa used to say, “Better to go to bed with a slap on your face than with a doubt in your mind.”

I’ve tried to live by that ever since.
