Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Klein and Alec Deane.
So, before we jump into specific questions about your business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We believe that college life provides an ideal opportunity to start and grow a business. College education is enormously expensive and students must dedicate most of their time to schoolwork. We know that they often need to spend money in order to save time and that their parents are usually supportive! Cultivating a successful business is achieved through tailoring your product or service to demonstrating value while also augmenting the efficiency of your customer’s lives. We launched our first business: WaffleBoyz, two years ago. We developed unique recipes for homemade infused, belgan waffles, which are sold to college students throughout Miami.
In just two months, we were offering our product on DoorDash, and two years later, we have just secured our second franchisee, this one at the University of Florida. While we continue to grow WaffleBoyz, we recently started our next venture, Spotless305. Spotless305 is a subscription cleaning service for apartments, homes and businesses that provides bi-weekly cleans at our customer’s convenience, operating in the South Florida area. We effectively function as the marketing arm of insured cleaners that operate in the South Florida area. In general, house cleaning services are relatively undifferentiated and often, the companies that provide services have limited marketing capabilities and are opaque in terms of training of their staff and cleaning standards. As a result, most companies providing cleaning services have difficulty attracting and then maintaining a client base. We are confident that customers will value greater transparency and higher standards of professionalism for cleaning services. From our Waffleboyz experience, we know that we can successfully connect with and market to South Florida residents and University students alike. This has resulted in us differentiating ourselves from the competition and generating a strong, loyal clientele.
Our customers appreciate the value that we bring and the cleaning companies we work with appreciate the steady flow of business, a classic win-win business scenario. The subscription aspect also separates our service, for as the emphasis on sanitization continues to grow, these bi-weekly cleans reduce the stress of our customers and are contributing to the effort of limiting the spread of COVID-19. We believe that there are other service businesses out there that would benefit from greater standardization and our marketing capabilities and we have our sights set on expanding into those sectors in the future.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Something that we think would be worth sharing in regards to adversity related to business is our unique perception of the overall concept. As our first company, Waffleboyz, was being started, our focus was solely on being successful and making money. We were two 19-year-olds excited about an idea that we believed in and as a result, became super focused in advancement and achievement. We feel this is a commonality amongst young entrepreneurs, for our world has become so accustomed to instant gratification, so when adversity inevitably arises, it is often not prepared for. From the early growth stages, we quickly realized that a successful business relies on much more than a valued product/service. The businesses that gain the most market share are the ones that figure out how to systematically create success through their product. This idea of creating success relies heavily on the ability to overcome hindrances. As we transition to our next business, Spotless305, we are transferring this knowledge and fervency to take on challenges and cultivate success through overcoming them.
We have faced a multitude of obstacles thus far. The one that we continually have to overcome is the fallacy that youth is synonymous with inability. The business arena is too cutthroat and throughout our various meetings with cleaners, clients, and investors, it became evident quickly that most established within the industry lack trust in 21-year-old college seniors. We understand why; we lack the experience that most successful business owners have. This lack of quantifiable experience is beyond our control, however, and from our studies of other businesses, we have realized that often businesses fail, for those operating them allocate too much effort to counteracting uncontrollable circumstances. Every day we look forward to proving the fact that what we may lack in experience, we make up for in our resilience and extreme dedication to fostering success, a category that we beat the “experienced” businesses in.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SPOTLESS305 – what should we know?
Spotless305 is an affordable, high-quality cleaning service that caters to residents and students across the city of Miami. What makes our company unique compared to our competitors is that we give our users the option of buying cleaning services one at a time or signing up for a more economical subscription plan. The way our subscription plan works is extremely simple. Based on the size of the apartment, dorm, house or commercial space, we charge a fixed price per month. This provides for two cleanings per month at a time that is convenient for the client.
We are especially proud of our online platform and how easy it is for people to book a cleaning on our site. We started Spotless305 after we experienced how complicated and time consuming it is to book a cleaning for our own apartment in Miami. Many of the websites were not technologically advanced, prices were not clearly stated on the site and it would take days to receive a quote and often it was challenging to find and communicate with knowledgeable employees of the business. We dedicated a lot of time and energy to creating a platform that is not only visually appealing but also extremely easy to navigate. On our website, people can see the exact price of the clean they want, book a day and time that works best for them and pay online. We are very proud that our platform makes it easy for customers to book cleans quickly and conveniently online and already have it paid for so they do not have to worry about having cash and tipping when the service is provided.
We have recently added a member to our team, Sofia Kalman. Sofia is an advertising major at the University of Florida and is experienced in helping startups with marketing plans. She is currently working on our social media accounts, target marketing with online advertisements and enhancing our website so it runs smoothly.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
At Spotless305, we emphasize the importance of making our platform accessible to users by focusing on our website design and our communication with customers. We believe one of the most important factors of success in this industry is creating a website that gives all of the details to our customers and making it as easy as possible for them to book a cleaning. Our website gives the clients an option to choose how many bedrooms they want to be cleaned, the exact time and date they want their place cleaned and allows them to pay online in which the client does not have to worry about tipping or paying the cleaner with cash. Booking a clean shouldn’t be a process where you have to call the company, request a quote, wait two days to hear back, then schedule a time.
It should be an easy 5-minute process where all of the information for the clean is online such as pricing, availability and cleaning options in which we have done at Spotless305. Another characteristic that we find important to our success is being young, educated students with communication skills that many of our competitors lack. Being current students, we are able to communicate to a wide audience at the University of Miami that our competitors may not be able to reach. We are both in the Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and we have many great relationships with students at Miami. This allows us to market by giving discounts to students, having them post on social media about us, and joining student Facebook groups in order to get the word out.
