Today we’d like to introduce you to Dania Elena Morejon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dania Elena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My mother, Maribel, started Maribelle Day Spa in May of 1996… I was a sixth grader at the time and was completely unaware of the huge impact Maribelle Day Spa would end up making in my life. My plan was to become a Dentist. I graduated high school in 2002 and was accepted into Nova Southeastern University’s dual admissions program for dentistry. That same year, however, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer at only 40 years old. In 2003, I made the decision to go “help” out the family business while my mother underwent chemotherapy and radiation. I’ve been “helping” for over 15 years!
Has it been a smooth road?
A well-traveled road should never be smooth… I would say working with family is the biggest struggle. There are a lot of generational differences as well as cultural differences when working with your parents, in particular. It’s a classic old school versus new school scenario.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Maribelle Day Spa story. Tell us more about the business.
At Maribelle’s, I basically do it all. I manage over 50 employees in a 5,000 square foot salon. I do social media, payroll, education training, and deal with business finances. We have been a Miami staple for over 23 years, so upholding the customer service we are known for has been my number one priority. Keeping the “small family business charm” our customers love end expect in this day and age has been my focus. We live in such a desensitized world where something as simple as remembering your client’s kids name means so much more than an Instagram like.
