Meet Damien Mills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damien Mills.

Damien, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It started with taking art classes in middle school. That’s when I first found out how much I love the arts and any creative task really. Although I had potential, I never took it seriously, I just viewed it as something fun to do with my friends. I dropped it entering high school before of other interests. After my first two years in college, I sort of fell into a depression having no direction in life and being just lost in general. After looking for a major I can commit too I found painting again and it instantly took over my life again. Now I’m constantly drawing inspiration from everything around me and just trying to stay creative everyday buy drawing, painting, photography and graphic design.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it was pretty much the opposite. Like I mentioned earlier me bring constant was a huge obstacle, not doing anything creative for over five years. I kind of just forgot my passion that I had for it. Also, I tend to lose interest in projects quickly, that’s why I have to jump around to different media in order just to keep myself going. Although I’ve found a good balance with having a consistent work ethic, my self-doubt is still a challenge that I face to this day and I’m sure it has affected every artist at the beginning of their career. I just have to remember that it can be frustrating and exhausting but nothing else can bring me more fulfillment, so I myself to keep going even when I lose faith.

We’d love to hear more about your art.
I am an independent visual artist that focuses on various media. I specialize in but not limited to, abstract painting and impromptu photography. All of my work is inspired by my spirituality and personal life experiences that can resonate with anyone.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Yes I have goals set up for my career, but for me, success is something that you should always be chasing. As soon as I say to myself, “ok I made it,” I fear that I can let off and plateau. So I guess it would be looking back at my work and seeing the progress I’ve made yet still acknowledging the work I have to put in to continually see the growth in myself.
