Today we’d like to introduce you to Curtis Peery.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Curtis. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. At age 14, I started working in the restaurant business as a dishwasher. My first employer was my uncle John Horne, the owner of Anna Maria Oyster Bar in Sarasota, Florida. In my 18 years in the restaurant business I’ve worked as a bus person, waiter, bartender and cook/prep cook.
In 2014, I decided to open my own restaurant in my home town of Jupiter, Florida. The location had what I was looking for and although it was small our team has made the space work and it’s been a huge success thus far.
Due to my wonderful team, our business continues to grow year over year. We continue to gain more and more repeat customers which is what every restaurateur strives for and today we are thankful to be running an amazing restaurant that we love.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? The restaurant business is extremely challenging. I would say my biggest challenge has always been staying on budget but still delivering the best product possible.
In the world of business, restaurants have some the highest failure rates of any the other category. Fortunately, I was able to secure what I needed to open the restaurant and keep things going and through my wife’s family and my family we all pitched in to help build tables, paint umbrellas and build our bar. I had to call in numerous favors from friends and family to realize my dream of opening my own restaurant.
Please tell us about Calaveras Cantina. Right now, we have close to 80 employees. I am very proud of our team and how the restaurant has grown. However, what I am most proud of is when I am able to promote a, “line level” employee to management. To me, it’s very gratifying to see someone start a career in a business that I helped create.
We encourage everyone to visit our website at www.calaverascantina.com and see our weekly specials. We have some amazing items to offer our visiting and local clientele, an incredible cocktail menu and a delicious brunch that’s a fan favorite on Saturday and Sunday.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently? Nothing. It has been a great experience for me and I feel that I needed to go through all of these experiences to be where I am today.
