Meet Colorknots

Today we’d like to introduce you to Colorknots.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Our story began two years ago. In 2017, we started talking more frequently in high school. We realized we had a lot of mutual interests and the friendship sooner blossomed into a deeper romantic relationship. After we graduated, we had a lot of decision making to do. Events led up to a huge decision which was to build up as much money as we could; pack up our things and move up to New York out of pure spontaneity – no definite plan but just to pursue at the time our separate music careers. Fast forward to our journey in New York – we lived in a shared Airbnb in Union, New Jersey close to the city for eight months with no clear direction. We began to create a life for ourselves there where we experienced the good and the bad of situations, meet interesting souls, and became exposed to new surroundings – energies – and ideas. Which led to the start of experimentation of each other’s voices; we began to feel a spark in a way that we had never felt when singing with each other. We felt that something in the universe was telling us the start of what we now call “Colorknots” was now beginning in this 4×4 room we had now made our home. From that point, we began to receive endless signs from the universe that we were headed on the right path. A moment that lives on with us is our first-time street performing and the people telling us how much chemistry we had performing together, it made things clear that we were brought together for a reason. We released our first bedroom single “lost” while being there using just a pair of cheap earphones and an iPad. Fast forward, a series of unfortunate events led to us having to move back home to Jacksonville, Fl. We felt the most lost and felt the most pain having to come back almost feeling defeated that things fell through. We took a break from “Colorknots” for a few months. We were still lost, sad, and confused as to why the universe had led us back home. Until one day in a coffee shop where one of us wrote some lyrics to an untitled song with no intention for it to be a group thing. But, as we spent more time in that coffee shop, we decided to make it a song for us together and from then on “Colorknots” was back to curating. Then on, we made it a vow to each other that through anything we would no longer deny the undeniable with the chemistry we had together in not only our relationship but with music.

Please tell us about your art.
We are a music duo group who creates music that is driven by our personal experiences, relationship struggles, the journey of confidence, and carefreeness. Other than that we are still influenced by so much more, we definitely want to be a voice for all the youth especially POC Lgbtq+ youth. We see and know a lot of the lgbtq+ community that remains voiceless within the music industry and just In general. With us being in a relationship and duo group we want to give the voiceless a voice. Though we are still figuring out exactly what our bigger purpose is, we still remain knowingly that no matter what we’re doing whether its music or any other creative outlet we just want to create and inspire others to be themselves unapologetically and genuinely.

What do you think about the conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
We feel our generation is powerful as f*ck. We have so many different ways to connect with different people around the world – at the tip of our fingertips. It’s so crazy to think of how possible it is to blow up overnight from a simple Instagram post. So we think as artists, life has become so much easier to get somewhere now more than ever, but with that, it has also become somewhat toxic for our generations mental health giving us false allusions of competition, negativity, and destroying confidence. With that, cities like ours with the artist community that we each have should strive and promote rising and growing not against but WITH each other. Also in cities, we should use social media to support and give exposure to the local artists. On a wider spectrum, we believe wholeheartedly artists should rise together because at the end of the day the world is big enough for all of our beautiful, talented selves, so why limit it?

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
