Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelique Ross.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Since I was a kid, there was always a pull towards art. I started truly taking it seriously around the time I was 18. I began practicing every day and trying to push the envelope. My thing was, if I’m going to do art, I want to introduce concepts and create images that no one has ever seen before. I was primarily creating art that was music related, as music is such a huge part of my life.
These past few months, I’ve taken a shift in my direction as an artist and it’s proven to be the best decision I’ve ever made. I was working at a job that didn’t build me up, or make me feel as if I was worth anything. It was a graphic design job, but I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. Something told me to up and quit, and I knew it was the right decision– even though I looked crazy. I felt this tug towards trying sports design. So, I quit my job January 2018, and decided to focus on sports design primarily. Within just 3 months, I was contacted by the NBA to work for them. I have been absolutely ecstatic with this new found look on both my artistic life and my life in general. Don’t ever give up! It’s been 10 years of almost consistent creating and trying to get that big break. There were times I did want to give up, but I didn’t! And please, listen to your intuition. It is everything.
Please tell us about your art.
Right now, I have a strong focus in sports design. I have loved sports since I was a kid. (I have my mom to thank for being such a HUGE Miami Heat fan). And of course, art has always been an absolute love and passion. Recently, I decided why not combine the two and see what comes of it! I already had a unique style, and I figured it would be even more unique/stand out in the sports art world.
Sports design is particularly fun for me because of the motion of the players in the images. They are so fun to work with! Then there’s the process of adding colors, shapes, textures, lighting, etc. that makes it so worthwhile. I’ve always been about experimenting. Constantly experiment. Do things other people aren’t doing. This is what gets you noticed, and what causes you to inspire others! Always try new things.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
My advice to other artists is PRACTICE. Practice, practice, practice. I’m always asked how to get better, or how to improve and that is always my number one answer. It may not be the prettiest answer, but it is the way. You only improve by putting in the time. Day in and day out. If it is truly your passion, that shouldn’t be a problem! You will surprise yourself with what you end up creating when you put in thousands of hours. It really is the only way!
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
