Today we’d like to introduce you to Cesar Matos.
Cesar, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in the Bronx, NY and as a teenager we moved to Puerto Rico. After college, I decided to join the Navy so that I could travel the world. I obtained my initial electrical experience in the Navy’s Nuclear Electrician’s Mate program. I visited many places during my military term but eventually ended up being stationed in beautiful San Diego. This is where I met the love of my life, Denise and we started our lives together. After six years in the military, I was actually hired by the General contractor who built our first apartment. He trained me in every aspect of the residential electrical trade during the seven years we worked together.
In 1992, we moved our family to Puerto Rico. I was hired by a major hotel chain as an Assistant Chief Engineer. This was fast-paced work and I learned how to manage personnel and provide superior customer service. In 2001 we moved to Miami and I was hired by a local electrical contractor. We started with one truck and eventually, the business grew to a fleet of 15 service vehicles. I helped manage a crew of about 30 technicians. Unfortunately, the business ended up closing down in 2007 and I decided it was time to go out on my own.
In 2008 Arcs & Sparks was created and this past year, we celebrated ten years in business! Funny story, people always ask about the name “Arcs & Sparks” and I tell them that it’s an electrical term but it’s also the first initials of my three kids: Amanda, Rachel and Cristian.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a pretty smooth road, thankfully! We have been blessed with excellent team members and clients.
Our client base is strong and when faced with any challenges, we are always upfront and honest. We have found that if you conduct business with this as a foundation you avoid any miscommunications along the way.
Please tell us about Arcs & Sparks.
We do all aspects of electrical work but have gained a reputation for being “Chandelier Specialists”. Because of this, we are often called in by Interior Designers, Local lighting stores and GC’s to perform repairs or troubleshooting on previously installed lighting & to provide white-glove installations such as antiques and high-end designer fixtures.
We are a BBB A+ accredited business and we are also certified by Tesla and QMerit to do electric vehicle charger installations.
In today’s South Florida market, clients look for reliability and for a contractor to do what they say they are going to do. We hear it all the time and we take their concerns very seriously. Communication is key! We believe in building a long term relationship with our clients based on trust and reliability. We want our clients to be “customers for life”. It is the main reason for our success as our business is based on 100% customer referrals.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over I would have started this business about ten years earlier, I had a lot more energy back then, lol! But honestly, I am pleased with the way things have gone with the business, we continue to learn and grow every day.
