Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Bejarano.
Carolina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was about six years old the first time I looked through a camera’s viewfinder. I can still remember that moment perfectly. I kept looking in and out of the viewfinder because the view from the camera seemed like I was peeking into a completely different reality. It felt like magic to me, and that’s when it all started! I moved to Barcelona, Spain for college to study Film & TV Production, and fell in love with videography. By then, Canon had launched its 7D camera that included HD video recording and that was a game changer for me as I was able to do both photography and videography at the same time.
In 2013 I moved to Miami, and started working in TV production and met a videographer, who learned about my background in media and offered me the Digital Content Videographer position at Nickelodeon that focused on capturing the Behind the Scenes content of the shows produced in Miami. I will be forever grateful to him as he introduced me to this part of the media business I never knew existed, and since then, I’ve been working as Digital Content Videographer for TV production and events, specializing in behind the scenes content.
Visual storytelling is who I am and has been my passion since I was kid, and that’s why I love to both shoot and edit my own material. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be doing exactly this! So I am incredibly lucky and grateful that I was able to transform my hobby into my career and business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
For me, starting out was the most difficult part of the process. As a freelancer, you mostly depend on the word of mouth and no one really knows you or your work at that point. I felt like I was saying “yes” to any project that came my way just to get myself known, but they weren’t necessarily projects I wanted to do. I knew that the concept of “behind the scenes” was my favorite, so I decided to refocus my work, specializing on that BTS style, which allowed me to break into a niche of the market that launched my career.
It’s a very competitive industry and freelancing is never easy as it can be very unstable. You also have to deal with people who undervalue your work because this job sometimes can come across as something “easy” to do. Someone once said to me, “you just point the camera and click, how easy is your job!?” and that shocked me. A lot of people don’t realize all the work there is behind that “point and click”, and all the work that comes afterward when we go into the editing process. I learned that my work is not something to give away for free. It is worth something, and respecting the value of it, starts with you.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Carolina Bejarano story. Tell us more about the business.
I do both photography and videography and my work is all about the behind the scenes. I love capturing “the moments in between the moment”. There’s so much spontaneity in those seconds where it seems that nothing is happening, but there’s always something going on! And my work showcases that the most, which I honestly love as I get to portray for the client a different perspective on their work and/or event for which they hired me.
I’m very proud of the path that has led me here. My brand bears my own name, Carolina Bejarano, as I shoot and edit all of the content myself. And despite the hardships that any job entails, the happiness I feel standing behind the camera never changes. Every project is a new opportunity to experiment, and this never-ending possibilities for creativity is what makes me more and more passionate about my work each day.
Tell us about your favorite and least favorites things about our city.
I lived in Barcelona for four years, and the contrast with Miami, specially in the cultural sense was quite a shock at the beginning. Thankfully, Miami’s cultural scene is growing, and this will continue to bring a lot of interesting projects and events that I would love to be part of.
It is definitely a city that has a lot to offer. As an Immigrant myself, I feel like Miami is a great place to start since there are so many different people willing to give you a chance. But on the downside, it’s also a city that has gotten way to expensive to live in. Like every city, it has its pros and cons, but I love how international the city feels as its population is basically a mix of countries from all over the world.
Pricing:
- Pricing varies according to the project as sometimes I create package deals. But they are usually as follows:
- Photo sessions prices are $350, and photography for events is $350 for 3 hours ($75 each additional hour)
- Videoshoot prices for events prices $500 for 3 hours ($75 each additional hour) *all prices include the editing process and delivery.
