Meet Brooke Blocker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooke Blocker.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in southeastern Georgia and had a unique upbringing because my backyard was literally a wholesale plant nursery! I spent countless evenings, weekends, and summers immersed in all things nature… so it’s in a way ingrained in me. I also learned a lot about entrepreneurship as I watched multiple family members juggle running businesses– and I even dabbled in the craft myself as I formed (unofficially!) ventures, products, and ideas for my family to test out.

After spending my later years studying and working in psychology and wellness, I found myself coming back to plants and entrepreneurship. That’s when I started Outside In. I wanted to create a seamless, approachable way to connect people with plants while supporting the planet.

Launching Outside In in March of 2020, there was a lot of uncertainty to say the least. But the response was amazing with many finding a new love for houseplants. Especially during an isolating time, people were able to connect with nature in a unique way and bring a renewed sense of joy into their homes– all through plants!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth, and again, starting a business while the world was shutting down wasn’t ideal. Issues are commonplace in any stage of business, but right now in the start-up phase, working out the small kinks– which vary weekly– has just become part of the process.

There’s also the emotional rollercoasters that go hand in hand with opening any business. And I still notice these feelings and fluctuations today– from imposter syndrome one day to feeling like I’m confidently contributing to society the next. I know that this is normal though and try to keep a consistent meditation practice to stay on the positive side. For me, operating with this mindful approach has helped reframe my perspective– letting go of expectations of how business/life “should” function and not allowing struggles to consume my energy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Outside In is an eco-conscious houseplant company that offers everything from beginner to uncommon plants as well as plant-related goods. We operate as a pop-up shop throughout South Florida and also as an e-commerce company, shipping plants nationwide. Our main focus is our eco-efforts, high quality, and customer education.

Specifically, we operate carbon neutral, use zero single-use plastics, and always source ethically. All of our precious plants are grown locally here in South Florida and are hand selected for the healthiest specimens.

Maybe more importantly, I want everyone to know the idea of a ‘green-thumb’ is actually a myth, and it has more to do with cultivating confidence with plants through knowledge and awareness. And Outside In exists to help everyone succeed with houseplants, which is why every plant purchase comes with complimentary care cards and lifetime plant support.

And finally, since we had such great reception to our pop-ups, we’re now looking to expand our South Florida physical presence– so be on the lookout for updates!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I love following certain people whether through podcasts, articles, blogs, or interviews. It’s usually strong, business-oriented women that share their expertise or “success”. I love hearing what the term “success” means to them– whether it’s finding that sweet spot with work and life or how they go about pursuing certain dreams. Currently, that list includes Shonda Rhimes and Tory Burch (her foundation has great free resources!).

I will say I also try to avoid those “how to” lists on being more productive or successful or whatever content we’re constantly inundated with. They’re disguised as one-size-fits-all advice but I can attest that waking up at 5 am for optimal productivity is just not it for all of us! We’re all independently distinct on our own paths and that’s the beauty of it!
