Today we’d like to introduce you to Britany (Bebe) Michelle.
Bebe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story started while in college. I attended Florida A&M University for Broadcast Journalism. While in college, I made the decision to stop relaxing my natural hair. The decision was less about my hair and more about the conscious decision to truly love how I was divinely created. (God makes no mistakes) When I began embracing my natural hair, it was a whole new world. I learned to love, take care of and develop a passion for helping others to embrace and learn their natural texture as well; through social media!
After returning home from college, and working a really awesome internship as an entertainment writer/reporter, I decided to go to cosmetology school. This decision stemmed from my natural gift of hairstyling (I had been doing hair since I was a kid), my passion for healthy hair care (especially for textured hair), and most importantly the opportunity I was given in 2013 to speak/teach at a seminar for Carol’s Daughter in New York. This was a turning point.
It was at that seminar where my path was more realized. I learned then that my passion was education, and if I wanted to travel + teach, I needed excellent credential + training. I went to the Aveda Institute that same year and sharpened my natural skills. I became more passionate about education when I realized the empty void for textured hair care in the beauty industry as a whole.
Fast forward to now, I’ve since started two businesses! I’ve opened a salon-studio in Fort Lauderdale, FL, where I take curly clients who travel from all over, and I’m the CEO of Bebe Michelle Naturals, a Salon-Quality hair product line with natural ingredients formulated to truly nourish and hydrate textured hair! I’ve also traveled to teach classes and seminars in multiple US cities, and was lead hairstylist for 40 episodes of the Disney Plus Original Series, Disney Family Sundays!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road the whole way, but that’s what makes a journey worth it. 15+ hour days on my feet, forgetting to eat, and handling every aspect of both businesses on my own was my norm. It takes true faith, determination, and drive to really see your vision through, especially while wearing so many “hats”! I could write a book on all the lessons I’ve learned so far, haha! The support, encouragement, + love from people around you help too! I’m grateful for everything that made me a stronger person and entrepreneur.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Bebe Michelle – what should we know?
I have two businesses:
1) Bebe Michelle: Licensed Cosmetologist, Texture Educator + Specialist.
2) Bebe Michelle Naturals: Salon-Quality hair products with natural ingredients formulated to truly hydrate and nourish textured hair.
I’m most known for my extremely transformative ‘curl definition’ photos and videos. Several of my posts on social media have gone “viral.” I literally do it all, haha. Cuts, color, highlights, balayage, silk press, sew-ins, updos, etc. I also make and sell Custom Units (wigs). I specialize in curly hair cuts, natural styles, and, most importantly, healthy hair care. My most popular haircut is my Bebe Michelle Signature Cut, for wavy, curly + coily hair types. What sets my Bebe Michelle Signature Cut apart from other curly hair cuts, is the fact that the hair is perfectly even whether worn curly or straight. No ‘curl-by-curl’ inconsistencies. Shape is thorough and precise.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
God, of course, the love and support of my family, and my clients!
