Hello! My name is Brian Hetrich and I am the director of sales, marketing and distribution at Vero Beach Spirulina. Together with my partner Joe Embres we grow and distribute the “Superfood of the Future.” At our 10-acre farm we been delivering the highest quality Spirulina across the nation for over twelve years. At Vero Beach Spirulina we only grow one product – spirulina! Spirulina is a blue-green aquaculture – that is, an edible plant that grows in water. What makes Vero Beach Spirulina different is our Spirulina is available truly raw and truly fresh. It has never been cooked or spray dried or powdered. Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We as a highly developed nation are victims of our own success. We live in a culture today where convenience is king. We have sacrificed our health on the alter of ultra-processed fast food believing that this is somehow progress. Fresh, whole foods are critical for proper nutrition and regaining our health. In order to do this we must return to the basics. We must get back to the garden.
At Vero Beach Spirulina we are attempting to do just that by offering a truly fresh food. Our biggest competition has been powdered spirulina. All the spirulina that you’ll find in stores apart from ours comes in an ultra-processed dried form—as a powder, tablet, or capsule format. This makes their spirulina easier to package, store, and transport. But to get spirulina into this dry, shelf-stable form, it must be ultra processed. It must go through an intense spray drying and cooking process, which dramatically changes the nutritional makeup of their spirulina. Many essential nutrients are heat and pressure sensitive such as vitamins, enzymes, phytonutrients, amino acids and essential fatty acids. Unfortunately they are destroyed in this spray drying and cooking process. Not much is left after this processing except a burnt mineral ash.
