Meet Barbie Rivera of Miami, FL

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbie Rivera.

Hi Barbie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
What would you do if a teacher labeled your six-year-old “mentally handicapped” and pushed ADHD meds as the solution?

That’s exactly what author Barbie Rivera faced when school psychiatrists tried to medicate her bilingual, bright son—without her knowledge or consent. Refusing to let the system decide his future, she pulled him out and launched her own micro-school. Today, he’s thriving. But many parents aren’t as fortunate.

Psychologists, psychiatrists, and pharmaceutical companies have taken over classrooms, turning schools into mental health clinics more focused on prescriptions than reading, writing, and math.

For over 34 years, Barbie has fought back. As founder of H.E.L.P. Miami, an accredited K-12 private school, and author of Enough Is Enough!, she helps parents challenge flawed diagnoses, reject harmful meds, and reclaim their children’s potential—rewriting the educational narrative for good.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for Barbie Rivera. Her journey began when her six-year-old son was nearly medicated for ADHD by school psychiatrists— without her knowledge or consent. Refusing to let the system define her child, Barbie pulled him out and started her own micro-school.

That decision came with countless challenges: pushback from institutions, financial strain, and the emotional weight of going against the grain. But she never backed down.

Over 34 years later, Barbie is the founder of H.E.L.P. Miami, an accredited K–12 private school, and the author of Enough Is Enough!. She continues to advocate for parents and children caught in a flawed system, exposing how labels and medication are too often used as quick fixes.

Her story is one of courage, conviction, and unwavering belief in a child’s potential—proving that the hardest path is often the most rewarding.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
In 1991, a teacher labeled Barbie’s six-year-old son “mentally handicapped,” recommending lifelong ADHD medication. Barbie refused to accept this and, seeing her bright, bilingual son lose his spark, took action. By 1992, she began homeschooling, eventually founding H.E.L.P. Miami, an accredited K-12 private school. Featured in media like Epoch Times, Barbie has spent 34 years exposing educational suppression. Her book, Enough Is Enough, reveals the alarming realities of psych-driven school systems and offers a bold solution. Praised as conversational yet powerful, it’s igniting a call to action for parents and educators to demand meaningful change.
