Meet Athena Gardner of WeWealth Women

Today we’d like to introduce you to Athena Gardner

Hi Athena, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Wewealth Women was founded in March 2023 from the belief that every woman deserves to be wealthy. As an immigrant who came to the United States at the age of nine, I understand how access to opportunities and resources can significantly impact a woman’s life. Through hard work and determination, I put myself through school and began my career in accounting and finance at one of the world’s top accounting firms.

While this was a notable achievement, I soon realized that my formal education and elite corporate training did not fully prepare me for the complex realities of wealth, especially as they pertain to women. Although I grasped the financial aspects of wealth, I lacked an understanding of the societal, emotional, relational, and habitual dimensions of it.

Women face unique challenges regarding wealth. We’re often conditioned to believe that we can achieve financial security through beauty or by marrying wealthy partners. However, hard work does not guarantee wealth, and even affluent women can experience financial deception and abuse. Statistics show that women typically earn less than men for similar roles, can lose an average of $1 million in their lifetimes due to caregiving responsibilities, and may face financial hardship after divorce.

Recognizing these disparities, I created Wewealth Women as a supportive community focused on wealth, wisdom, and womanhood. Our mission is to empower women by sharing knowledge and resources, enabling them to build lives filled with happiness and financial security. Together, we strive to create an environment where women can thrive, challenge societal norms, and reclaim their financial destinies.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every business venture presents its challenges, and starting Wewealth Women was no exception. As a CPA, I had experience in setting up and registering businesses, which simplified that aspect. However, my primary challenge has been identifying my target audience and effectively reaching out to them while fostering engagement.

I discovered that while many women could greatly benefit from the supportive community Wewealth Women offers, the psychology surrounding women’s perceptions of wealth poses unique challenges. Many women tend to project an image of wealth, yet they often grapple with feelings of financial shame and guilt. They might feel they should be achieving more, experience overwhelm, or exhibit poor financial habits linked to low self-esteem.

This created a significant hurdle: encouraging women to engage with my community. Unfortunately, many would rather suffer in silence than confront their feelings of shame. Despite these challenges, I have made meaningful progress in outreach and am continuously refining my approach to effectively connect with and empower women.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I have a passion for art shows, traveling, and cultural activities. As a spontaneous and adventurous person, I’m always eager to try new things and create unique experiences for myself. Whether it’s attending a concert or sampling the latest dish at a new restaurant, I strive to engage fully with life.

On the flip side, I have a strong dislike for negativity, bad attitudes, and poor customer service!
