Meet Ashley Nicole Moss, TV’s Next Superstar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Nicole Moss.

Ashley Nicole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey to journalism actually started with my love of acting. Commercials, theater, movies (I was in a movie with Robin Williams when I was a teenager), you name it, I did it. It’s funny, I’ve always been a shy and introverted person when it comes to dealing with people one-on-one, but being on-camera or speaking publicly always came naturally to me.

It wasn’t until my freshman year of high school when my interest in acting took a backseat to my love (more like an obsession) with sports. I was a two-sport athlete (basketball and volleyball) and when I wasn’t playing, I was watching with my dad. I really credit him with igniting my passion. It was more than just watching the game… he taught me to understand it and I’ve been hooked ever since. However, my first opportunity as a journalist came in entertainment during college.

I was an intern at SFL-TV, South Florida’s CW affiliate during my junior year of college. It was primarily a production focused internship, however, when my boss had to take some time off for personal reasons… I took his place. It was my first time being on a televised platform for journalism, but I was beyond ready for the challenge. I soon became addicted to the feeling.

After graduation, I got my next opportunity (this time in sports) with NBC 6. I started as a sideline reporter on ‘Generation Nexxt’, a prime-time youth sports program and was promoted to co-host the following season. In the same year, I covered the 2015 Orange Bowl for Fox Sports Florida. Since then, I’ve covered high school signing days, interviewed Pat Riley, Jason Taylor, Udonis Haslem and worked with the Miami Dolphins.

Currently, I have been delving into sports documentaries as a journalist and producer. My first film ‘#SWAGCHECK’ with FNO Productions is award-winning and my next film, ‘Take It To The Maxx’ premieres early next year.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is that a thing? Theodore Roosevelt once said: “Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means effort, pain, difficulty… I have never in my life envied a human being who led an easy life.” I believe that (if you allow it) “struggle” builds character. I’m a very spiritual person and for me, it’s my faith that helps me to remember that it’s the journey, not the destination that’s the most important. There are lessons in everything.

For me, being a woman in a male dominated industry has been the biggest struggle. You have people who assume that because you’re attractive, you’re not smart. Untrue. I graduated college Magna Cum Laude (with a 3.8 GPA). I’ll be attending graduate school next year at UM. You have people who assume that you’ve never had to work for anything. Untrue. You have people who assume you can’t handle the pressure. Untrue.

I have people who assume that I don’t know the game. Untrue. I have ‘Tape Tuesdays’ where I watch film from the weekend’s games (football and basketball). I have a binder filled with offensive and defensive plays and I see how many I can point out in a film session. The ones I get incorrect… I study more.

I’ve also had men in the industry who have extended their help… with the wrong intentions. However, compromising my morals is never an option for me. I’m very independent. I’m a feminist. I can’t wait to look back on everything I’ve accomplished and built and know that I did it on my own. My mother instilled that in me.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
That’s an easy one. God and my parents. It’s that simple. Despite any obstacles or bad days I face, I am truly blessed and there isn’t a day I don’t remind myself of that. I have a constant safe place to succeed, to fail and to regroup. Everyone needs that. Throughout my entire life, my parents really pushed me to be the best version of myself and it’s shaped my work ethic and mentality. It’s not about competing with everyone and everything around you… I’m in competition with myself. Physically, mentally and spiritually, each day I strive to be better, to learn more and to grow more.
