Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Humphreys.
Anthony, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I actually fell into photography by mistake. I went to school for graphic design and finished with a master’s in business. While I was in design school I wanted a DSLR for doing simple things such as taking stock photography. For example, if I had a botanical garden that hired me to design a brochure, I felt I was technically savvy enough to go take a picture of a flower instead of buying a stock image. I began shooting my friends and just getting more into it but nothing too serious. A friend of mine in Miami worked for Wilhelmina Models and one day they needed a last minute photographer and he knew I had the nice camera so he called me and asked to do it. I remember being very hesitant in the sense of “uh, uh, I am not a real photographer.” But he basically says “You get paid, and if we hate the pictures we won’t use you again. You’ve got nothing to lose.” I went ahead and did it and I feel like that is the day that everything clicked for me. I’ve always been into the arts, into design, into fashion and into technology. Suddenly it seemed like photography somehow linked all of those passions together.
After a couple of years of building my book with modeling agencies, I moved to New York City where I became a photographer at Barneys New York. I had ZERO product, e-commerce or ready to wear imagery in my portfolio. Thankfully the person that interviewed me and became my boss saw a drive and passion in me and hired me despite my portfolio having no product or ecom. It was here that I learned most of my studio techniques, learned how to shoot and style e-commerce ready to wear and product.
I moved on two years later to be the sole client-facing marketing photographer for Thrillist Media Group where I shot co-branded content for multi-million dollar campaigns. Trident, Sonicare, Jaguar, Kia, Wild Turkey, Grey Goose, Coach, etc were some of the clients I worked with. I shot tons of food and drink and learned food styling here.
After an over four year stint in NYC, I decided to move back to Miami and work for myself. I do not consider myself the typical photographer as I am not specifically a “portrait” or an “event” or a “product” photographer. I am well versed in my trade in a variety of categories now.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all! I believe the biggest struggle for any photographer is the cost of the profession and SPACE. While a great photographer is what really makes a great image, of course, there are technical limitations to what you are capable of depending on the equipment at hand. Living in New York City isn’t exactly a cheap situation either. Neither is the lack of space inside your home, never mind being able to afford an apartment AND a studio space. Learning to deal with what was available to me and in the confined spaces I had was always difficult for me. I had the pleasure of having my full time in a HUGE studio space with all the equipment I could ever need but when it came to freelance jobs I’d always have to be creative as my apartment just would not cut it. Often times I reached out to furniture showrooms and what not and offer marketing materials in exchange for a location to shoot it. It actually worked pretty often!
