Today we’d like to introduce you to AnJanet Coleman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Toddlers and Tangles was started as a way to connect people who were looking for kid-friendly hairstylist.
After I had my second child, a girl, I needed someone to style my first child’s hair, who also is a girl. I would book appointments with kid hairstylist, and they were no call and no shows or they didn’t provide a location to go to on the day of the appointment. Some were super late. Or the locations were not suitable for kids or did not feel safe.
I searched endlessly for a directory or a reference for kid hairstylist. There were not any at the time. My only reference were referrals from others. Since there wasn’t anything out like it, I decided to create it. My primary goal was to connect people with persons who specialized in kid hair and kid hair care. Toddlers and Tangles was born, from the need to connect mothers with kid-friendly professional hairstylist and also serve as a reference for all things kids hair care. However, the breath and inspiration of Toddlers and Tangles are my three daughters.
Today, we have grown to have a large base of followers who look to us as a trusted guide for kid hair care, a source of inspiration for kid hair styles and as a place to find featured kiddie hair care professionals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The creation of Toddlers and Tangles was a struggle in the beginning. Since there was not anything out there like it, I was pretty much starting from scratch. I had to search for hairstylist. I had to search for mothers who needed hair care services and connect the two. Social media, specifically, Instagram, was my go to platform. At first I felt like no one was listening and that my efforts were futile. Since I felt like this, I initially gave up. I stopped. Then, I had another baby….another girl. The birth of my third baby was the rebirth of Toddlers and Tangles. I was driven to be the bridge to connect people and provide advice on their hair care for little ones hair. The second time I started I did not stop and Toddlers and Tangles is in full motion.
As our following grew I noticed another need. Persons wanted cute hair products that were perfect for little girls. I would read comments and saw that mothers wanted a particular type of accessory and could not easily find it. Filling this need became a part of our mission. Recently, our brand announced we are launching a product line. The product line will be available for purchase really soon, and we are excited that we are able to expand our scope of services and offer our followers more things for their kid tresses.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Toddlers and Tangles ?
Toddlers and Tangles began from a small seed built on a need. Our mission is to put knotty knots on timeout, while teaching people about hair care regiments and tips for little ones hair. Hair care for kids is definitely different from hair care for adults.
We have a website that allows kid friendly hairstylist to upload their contact information, images and photos for FREE! We let them advertise their scope of work, with an end goal of getting them more business and connecting a mother who needs their service.
We also have a blog. The blog is about the trials and tribulations of hair care for kids. It features tawdry unspoken hair Dos and Don’ts, as well as myths about hair care.
We are also different because we are not only focused on connecting professionals, we also want our followers to know about the best products and cutest little hairstyles. The essence of our overall brand is definitely little girl hair care, and we want to make sure that our products carry the same feel and give the vibe of the nursery rhyme “sugar and spice and everything nice.”
What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised in Miami. I was the epitome of a girly girl. I liked frilly dresses and playing dress up, dolls and baking. All the things that one associates with being a girl that was me. I was a studious student and an avid reader. In school my grades were excellent, however my conduct was deplorable. I loved to talk and socialize. I had friends, was social and always a dreamer. Growing up I always said I wanted two girls, which I was blessed with along with a third blessing.
