Today we’d like to introduce you to Anjane Girwarr.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My career as an artist began in middle school, singing “A Whole New World” in my best friend’s room, where she told me, “Hey! You’re good at singing, you should join choir”. After singing in choir all throughout middle school and high school, I knew singing was what I had to study in college. I originally wanted to be a choir director, but accidentally fell with musical theater when I was studying opera in my master’s degree. This musical mistress became something I was soon to fully commit to, and I started performing in musicals all throughout South Florida. With only two months left of my Opera performance degree, I was in the right place at the right time and was gifted one of the best jobs I could only ever dream of: a professor of Voice at the University of Miami Theater Arts Department. My life as a singer led me to my husband, who is also a musician and gets to be my audience member for every dinging room show I put on for him about once a week when I’m preparing for broadway auditions.
I believe life as an artist invites opportunity to bring art into every aspect of life. My home, my wardrobe, and even my nail art all serve as canvases to express myself on. I believe anything can be an artistic moment if you seize the opportunity to let it be one.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am fortunate to say teaching voice has always been a smooth road. My performing career began at an all time high when I got almost everything I auditioned for. Now that I’m auditioning for Broadway shows, the shots I take are like trying to land a bullseye on a quarter sized dart board moving in circles. But I believe you only fail until you quit.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in musical theater. I teach it and I perform it. What sets me a part is my classical and musical background. This allows me to bring a strong technical background to my artistry and gifts me versatility in styles from classical musical theater to contemporary musical theater.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My husband has been my number one supporter since we met 17 years ago. He has supported every audition, role, dream no matter how big or small every step of the way. He’s even played piano for quite a few of them. (Perks of marrying a pianist, haha!)
