Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Rodriguez.
Angel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Angel, better known as Lil plastic Love. I’m a Cuban drag artist born and raised in Miami. I’ve been doing drag here in Miami for about a year and a half now. I started drag because of my passion for makeup and have always loved acting and performing, so it made sense to put it all together and make the entity I am today.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve faced a lot of obstacles, especially when it comes to family. Growing up in Miami, we can usually all relate to having strict Hispanic parents. My parents are very religious so they didn’t get on board right away. My family still isn’t 100% behind it but they are more tolerant of it now. In the scene itself, there have been obstacles for me to overcome, whether it be regarding self-doubt or making myself known as a force to be reckoned within the community.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Lil plastic has always been a brand to me. I want anyone that sees me to feel like they’re experiencing a sort of computer-generated anime girl. I think my drag is ever-changing and well versed when it comes to looks, which is where I excel and have the most fun. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time. I started drag in February of 2019 and I would be lying if I was to say I didn’t see myself getting this far so soon. I’ve always had a strong aesthetic, which is key to branding and also sets me apart from others. A lot of performers in Miami are showgirls or just different variants of the same aesthetic and I don’t think there is anyone quite like me in the scene.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I was to start over, I would have committed more to the mindset of drag being a business and myself being the product. Being careful who I associate with and always holding myself up to a standard. When being surrounded with such amazing talent here in Miami, it’s easy to fall into self-doubt, which I saw a lot in the beginning but when you are trying to sell a product you can’t doubt it because if you doubt it yourself who else is going to believe in it? I now pride myself in my art and see that it sets me apart from the rest.
