Meet Amayah of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amayah.

Hi Amayah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a 23 year-old rapper, singer, and songwriter who was raised in North Miami Beach, but is currently based in Broward County, Fl. With a unique blend of old school and gritty influence from my New York-raised parents and a futuristic sound, I grew to create music that is both captivating and boundary-pushing.
I first entered the rap scene when I was on Lifetime’s competition TV show “The Rap Game” at 14 years old. My talent and raw passion for music caught the attention of viewers, and I quickly became a fan favorite. It was during my time on the show that my old school New York influence shone through, showcasing my ability to effortlessly flow over classic beats and deliver hard-hitting lyrics. I only had one major issue – stage fright. I was ridiculed for my lack of confidence in front of crowds when it was time to perform, and eventually I’d be sent home from the show. I proceeded to gain stage presence and confidence over the years, as I won a worldwide rap competition entitled “Top Spitter” on Instagram which was judged by well-known battlers such as DNA and Math Hoffa. Additionally, I have won a cypher on WorldStarHipHop, and even got to final auditions for Wild N’ Out, showcasing whole new wave of confidence.

I now do unique shows all over south Florida, bringing raw energy and star power to the stage with spanglish verses, catchy melodies, and striking visuals and choreography.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been easy building my image up from scratch, especially after being ridiculed in my adolescence for forgetting my lyrics and having stage fright. I was also chubby as a kid so lot’s of people worldwide had choice words for me once the show aired. It’s hard for people to let that image that they first saw go, so I had to build myself an even bigger identity that demanded respect and admiration instead. I spent years putting in work on my craft, performing in various states, such as New York and California. I completely changed my habits and mindset, and I never let social anxiety have power over me again. It’s also a grind when you don’t have a team to back you with moral and financial support, especially when you’re a woman like me with BIG ideas. Many times I’ve had to just have blind faith in these ideas, and executing them with whatever resources I could use at the time only made me more creative.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I record and write music, sing, rap, dance, and perform. I am most proud of the music videos and promotional assets I’ve directed and edited myself, and also all the showcases I’ve performed at, being the mind behind the whole process from putting together outfits, dance routines, and training extremely well to keep endurance while I’m moving around so much. I believe what sets me apart from others my authenticity and drive. I don’t just release a song and forget about it, I create a world around the song that others want top be apart of. I am like a one-woman show who handles strategic marketing efforts, writing all the music, and dressing distinctly enough to be memorable.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
One of the best feelings as a creative is when an idea in my head gets executed. It’s beautiful to witness the literal manifestation of something that started out as a tiny seed planted in my mind. This requires you to pour your time and love into this ideas it can sprout into the full thing. Life will happen and get in the way, which is what makes it so rewarding and impactful once the idea is finally brought to life. You learn so much about yourself during the process and persisting through these circumstances. Outside of music, freedom is super important to me in order to maintain happiness. If I feel constrained or put in a box, it shifts my mood entirely and naturally makes me want to rebel and do my own thing. I feel freedom is what sets this generation apart from those who came before us, and we should not take it for granted, ever.
