Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Dixon.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am the daughter of Jamaican immigrants and was raised in Palm Beach County. My parents made it clear that education was priority and raised my brother and I to not shy away from having strong and informed opinions on matters that we believed in. I always had an interest in history.
Specifically, American history. Through my studies, I came to discover that although change came through civil disobedience, protest, and resistance, there were also advocates in the courtroom fighting for basic rights. Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, Loving v. Virginia are all court cases fought by attorneys. I wanted to be in the courtroom.
Has it been a smooth road?
My grandfather passed my first semester of law school. This was months after he attended my college graduation at Florida State University. He never got to see me become an attorney. He never had the chance to obtain a higher education but he worked so hard to leave a legacy that allowed me to achieve one. I honor him through my career.
