Meet Alex Finnie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Finnie.

Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
South Florida is home! My family moved to Miami from New Jersey when I was ten years old. I’ve always been heavily involved in the performing arts. My love for talking and being nosey and inquisitive started at a very young age. I attended the Cushman School and then New World School of the Arts for high school where I studied musical theater. I then went back up north to St. John’s University in NYC, where I graduated with my B.S. in Television and Film Production. I knew very early on that I wanted to pursue a career in television news, so from there, I charted my plan and path. While in college, I focused heavily on internships. I held a few in various cities across the country, including one right here in South Florida. I interned at Miami Dade TV and learned so much! What a great hand on experience. It was my senior year internship at Fox 5 NY that helped sharpen my focus and cemented my desire to pursue a career in television news. My first job after college graduation was at Fox 5 as a newsroom trainee.

I worked on the assignment desk and would rip and run scripts to the anchors during the evening newscasts. I would then spend my off time going into the station to shadow reporters and photographers out in the field. I picked their brains and learned so much about what it takes to be a true, dedicated, hardworking journalist. I began my on camera career just 20 minutes north of Philadelphia, PA in a town called Levittown. I worked as a video reporter for a local paper called “The Bucks County Courier Times”. From there, I went on to work as a morning show reporter at WAAY 31 in Huntsville, Alabama. My next stop was CBS42 in Birmingham, Alabama where I worked as a weekend morning show anchor/reporter for three years. That opportunity helped to prepare me for my current role. I returned home to South Florida in May 2018 to work for the one and only Local 10 News. I currently serve as the weekend morning show anchor in one of the most electrifying markets in the country!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path to your dream is rarely easy. I could go on and on about the sacrifices and struggles I’ve faced thus far, but how much time do you have? Here’s the thing, the dream is free, but the hustle is sold separately. It’s filled with ups and downs. Laughter and tears. You’ve got to be armored on all fronts. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is have thick skin and try not to take life too seriously. Take those W’s like you take the L’s. Work hard, but know when to be kind to yourself. Balance is key. There will be people that will doubt you and at times, you will doubt yourself. In those moments of chaos, I always tell myself, “pause. Chill.” It’s in those moments where you will find the most clarity. Keep your head on a swivel at all times. Lead with kindness and work from a genuine place, always. Believe in your own unique energy & vibration, because if you don’t, who will?

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a storyteller! I love connecting with people. We all lead such unique lives and that’s what makes our world so beautiful. I love to learn from every day people who have extraordinary stories. I love to be a voice for those that feel silenced. I have been a television news journalist just under a decade. I’ve travelled, worked in different news markets and I report on different topics all the time. The one common theme across the board; connection. In each story, it’s so important to connect with people and/or the subject matter. I absorb their energy and/or the energy of the circumstance in those moments. Being a journalist is a responsibility that I don’t take lightly. As a matter of fact, it’s a privilege. I often think to myself; we walk by people all the time. Come in contact with people, EVERY DAY! Yet, we know nothing about many of the people we cross paths with usually. We ALL have a story. What a joy it is for me to be able to be a vehicle for those stories.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I don’t know if this is surprising, but I am a very goofy fun loving person. My family is everything. I love to travel. I am very much a part of my city. I love South Florida. Community service is a passion of mine and I love to give back and celebrate the successes of others. Being a mentor for young girls is something I hold near and dear to my heart. Sharing positive black stories is important to me as well. We need more of that.
