Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cazo.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
One Seed started off as a passion project for me and my partner, AJ Morales. Both of us had a great love for the outdoors and had worked office jobs that were significant in that they taught us the basic structure for how to run a business, but there was something missing in our purpose, for lack of a better word. AJ had worked in Corporate America for Fortune 500 companies, but always loved garden building and I had run a construction company with my father who is a long-time developer in South Florida, but I preferred to be working with plants and helping clients build out their dream gardens. So, AJ and I, high school chums, decided to launch One Seed in 2011 and have never looked back.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like anything in life that has value there have definitely been struggles, but in the end, they were struggles that were necessary to make us the company we are today. The struggles have been basic ones like for example, understanding the proper plant materials that hold up against salt water in the air (in waterfront properties), through trial and error figuring out which nurseries sell the best plants, and most importantly, managing the expectations of the clients, making sure that they understand what’s realistic and not realistic.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
If our clients are happy then we have done our jobs. That is the core of our company’s mindset. One Seed aims to build well-designed gardens, from conception to completion, that delight the senses and remind us of the connection we share with the natural world. We understand the responsibility entrusted to us in designing your landscape. Our vision will become part of your family; your children and grandchildren will run in gardens we created for you. One Seed’s personal and design principles — our company’s foundation — are built on integrity, relevancy, and honor to nature.
What were you like growing up?
I should have been born in the water. Some of my earliest and favorite memories have taken place in the ocean. It truly is where I am happiest. I’ve always been a pretty easy going guy that has always kept in close contact with family and childhood friends. As a kid, I enjoyed fishing and surfing. Fishing is something I still do, but I’m afraid to admit that I did not stay committed to surfing, a sport I truly enjoy.
