Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Alan Patterson.
Dr. Patterson, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a board-certified OB-GYN. I was initially in practice in Indianapolis, Indiana from 1983-1991 and I moved to Boca Raton in 1991. I initially joined a practice, but I left that practice 1 year later and opened my own office in Pompano Beach in Sept 1992.
A year later, I opened a secondary office in Boca Raton in 1993. In 1995, I moved my Pompano Beach office to Coral Springs on University Drive. Today, I have 2 offices. My main office is 7451 Wiles Rd Suite #205, a gorgeous office that is furnished with high-quality antiques supplied from my wife and mother-in-law’s internet antique business. My office does not look like your typical run of the mill drab OB-GYN office. I have a secondary office on 660 Glades road #304 Boca Raton. I live in Boca Raton.
My patients come to me because I am in solo practice and I have the experience 33 years in practice and the expertise, over 5600 babies delivered to give them the best-personalized care they can receive anywhere in South Florida. Also, I do many minor gynecology procedures in my office that other doctors will only do in the hospital or outpatient surgery center. The advantage of doing these in office are that it is more convenient for the patient, she does not have to undergo general anesthesia, and my patients are awake but do not have pain! Also, it is much cheaper for the patient to have these procedures done in office. a recent example without giving any other details. A few months ago a lady was scheduled to have a hysteroscopy ( which is a procedure where you take a small scope with a camera attached to it to look inside the uterus and then do a biopsy to make sure no abnormalities of the endometrial tissue. The doctor she originally saw was going to do this at an outpatient surgery center and put her to sleep for it and her charge was going to be $1000 !!!! She found me and we ran her benefits and her charge for me to do the 4-minute procedure in my office was $30 for her !!!! She did not feel anything, had a wonderful experience and she saved $970 !!!!!
I also do high and low-risk obstetrics and my patients only see me for their prenatal care, and I do their delivery. i have only missed 1 delivery in 5 years, a claim I don’t think any other OB-GYN in my area can make!
I also do the entire range gyn including birth control, STD screening and treatment, diagnosis and treatment of abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, menopausal issue, PMS, vaginal discharge and in office OB and gyn ultrasounds, and we just installed a brand new state of the art bone density machine in my Boca office! and every other gyn issue.
Many of my patients follow my active office Facebook page where I am constantly posting interesting articles about OB-GYN.
I have been married for 17 tears and my gorgeous, smart and talented wife home schools along with her mother our 2 children, ages 12 and 10 along with running her antique internet business and she is managing everything involved with a 3000 sq foot addition to our home that is halfway done, which is a huge undertaking and thanks to her expertise and planning we have built temporary walls so we are able to live her while the entire construction is being done.
My staff knows all of our patients and my great office manager Kim has been with me for 15 years! We try to give our patients the personalized care that they deserve.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When I first moved down here, I joined a practice for a year, but I left because I did not like the way the doctor I joined practiced medicine and even though I was supposed to eventually become a partner after 3 years I knew that would not happen, He had 3 other people he employed and never made any of them partners, ! He sued me because I opened my office 7.5 miles away and not 8 miles as was in my restrictive agreement but he later dropped the lawsuit and I have been my own boss since 1992!
In 2009, I was one of the first to join a larger organization called Florida Woman Care, a tremendous move for me as my good friend started it. Now we have 260 OB-GYN doctors all over the state of Florida. We all have our own individual practices but we are all part of this larger network which has l allowed us to stay independent and not have my practice bought out by a hospital. We have the power of number which has enabled us to have very fair rates for services rendered with all the insurances which i would never be able to do if I was independent by myself!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alan Patterson MD – what should we know?
I already did this. But I have more experience than almost any other OB-GYN in my area! I have an active obstetrics practice and do both high and low-risk obstetrics and deliver at 2 hospitals Boca Raton Regional and West Boca Medical Center and have more than few patients who live in Miami and Miami Beach drive all the way up here so I can do their delivery and provide their gynecology care.
My experience and expertise sets me apart and the personalized care I provide for my patients and my office staff know all of our patients. My office has the family approach to care. Also, I call all my patients with any abnormal lab or test, unlike most office where a nurse or MA calls the patient and then if the patient has a question that person is not trained to answer it like I am !!!
Please see my office Facebook page Alan Patterson, M.D.@coralspringsobgyn for the great reviews my patients have written about my practice on that page.
I have stated in a previous question all the services that I provide, but my experience ( I have seen many things that younger doctors in my field have not seen or had to take care of) 33 years in practice and still going VERY STRONG because I love what I do and my expertise – over 5600 deliveries gives my patients a level of care that other OB-GYNs cannot provide !!!
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My wife deserves credit she has been with me for 19 years, 2 before marriage and 17 great married years. She has helped me in so many ways!
Also, my great office staff as we are truly a personalized team that knows our patients.
