Meet Alan Espino of Beat Culture Brewery in Northwest Dade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Espino.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The story of Beat Culture is one that started many years ago. It started in college. I studied microbiology and was very much enamored with the subject matter… specifically when “anaerobic and aerobic respiration” was introduced in class. Single cellular organizing creating alcohol… the metabolic processes in which yeast underwent depending on its environment are just so complex. which resulted in the obsession. While working in pathology and R&D in biotech, I would research yeast and brew beer. I very much enjoyed the detail of it all more than the actual product. In 2010, with the help of my brother, Dan Espino, it went from hobby to a potentially viable business. Nine years later, with the help of 23 first and family, we were able to make the vision of a Miami brewery a reality. We are a bit atypical from most breweries. With an underlying objective of “all things fermentable”… Every Tuesday, we release a new beer. We also the only Mead/honey winemaker in Miami. We will be releasing the first commercially brewed Sake in the state of Florida. We ferment all of our hot sauce on-site… if it can be fermented, I will like to try it.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Most definitely it has not been a smooth road. I had to learn a lot… very quickly. Fortunately for us, we have an outstanding group of friends and family that helped a ton. We did everything at the brewery. Find the property, define buildout requirements, physically build out the location, lay tile, drywall, paint, permitting, licensing, branding… and of course, leave time to make beer. In hindsight, it was nothing we couldnt figure out.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a locally-owned and sourced, small-batch craft brewery that seeks to redefine a one-of-a-kind experience by focusing on “all things fermentable” and creative seasonal food all in a comfortable environment. In our brewhouse, we craft traditional beer styles ranging from hoppy, fruity, barrel-aged creations, in addition to honey wine. While in our kitchen, we create breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings resulting from a fusion of local cultures.

Small batches over mass production. Local over imported… while maintaining our sense of responsibility to our community and environment.

When you look back, what are you most proud of?
The day all of our brewery equipment was delivered was a pretty special day. Having complete strangers come into our brewery and enjoy our space, our beer, our food, never gets old.
