Meet Adrienne Michelle Horn of I A.M. Editing, Ink in Pembroke Pines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrienne Michelle Horn.

Adrienne Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In the winter of 2016, I had the unfortunate experience of being laid off of my job as a new mother and the sole provider of my household. I tried everything that I could to find another job, but no one would hire me because I was overqualified. In the midst of despair, I remembered that I minored in English in college and decided to put it to use.

From there, I A.M. Editing, Ink was born. Since then, I have been able to share my editing gift with individuals both domestically and internationally. What started as an answer to my problem became the answer to the issues that many others were facing, and I began an empowering journey through entrepreneurship. My desire is to make sure that my clients have a quality experience that leaves them with the confidence that they need to excel.

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! However, I am extremely grateful that it has not been.

When I began my company, I was responsible for about 90% of the operations of my business, which equates to being a one-woman show. I found much success as a first-time entrepreneur. However, I was burning myself out, and I had not even truly gotten started. Statistics show that 20% of small businesses fail after one year of business. I was determined to succeed. I did not want to be in that 20 percent. However, I had one issue – I was petrified of delegating.

In my personal life, I had been accustomed to do everything on my own. And you know how the saying goes. If you want it done right, do it yourself. I believed that wholeheartedly. However, I knew that succeeding required soliciting help. Hence, my next roadblock – finding people who were dependable and skilled with their craft.

Like the majority of my clients, I have lost money and been placed in compromising positions because I put my trust in the wrong individuals. As I’ve grown, I have learned how to properly select team members and am very proud to say that each one of them has helped contribute to my success.

Being a full-time pharmacist, a full-time editor, and a full-time mother can be challenging at times, but work in these roles has shown me the importance of time management and taught me how to prioritize those things, such as my family, that is most important.

Please tell us more about your work. What do you guys do? What do you specialize in? What sets you apart from competition?

We also offer professional development services, which include resume development, business cards, and graduate student dissertations. I believe that my company presents a unique experience to our audience of customers because of my ability to offer them valuable work with the heart of a mother and the skillful eye of an editor. Each client considers their literary project as “their baby,” and I help to ensure that the needs are taken care of.

As a company, I am most proud of being able to have community service is a pillar within our company. The company hosts workshops for high school and college students completely free of charge to equip them with the necessary tools to be able to apply for jobs and help increase the income in their households. We teach them how to appropriately construct resumes, what to include in their cover letters, and the essentials of interview etiquette.

Most of my clients have a fear of losing out on time and money while trying to present their body of work to the world. They consider their work to be extensions of themselves and, therefore, cannot afford to waste their tangible resources on services and goods that cannot produce profitable outcomes for their lives. Most cannot ensure success because they simply do not know where to start. What sets I A.M. Editing, Ink apart from others is how we help eradicate this fear. We are able to help the customer by providing affordable solutions and serving as a guide through the process so that they become comfortable and no longer have to suffer from the fears and concerns of publishing their body of work.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Honestly, I do. Unfortunately, while there are many successful individuals in South Florida, there is more emphasis placed on status and fame than literacy. Many would automatically assume that this trend alone would make this a terrible location, but I believe the contrary.

If someone was just starting out, I would recommend that they start here if they want to make a difference. There are many aspiring authors in South Florida. There are also very successful authors who have been birthed here. Lastly, there is a tremendous opportunity to address literacy deficits in various areas throughout our community.

Though it may pose a challenge, I can attest that the positive impact made on the lives of fellow members of the community will make it all worth it.
