Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Hernandez.
Adriana, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been interested in art, crafts, and anything unconventional and creative as far back as I can remember.
Creating has always been something that brought me comfort and happiness, and while I was in the process of figuring out what to do with my life after high school, dealing with the pressure and expectations of my family to take on a “serious” career.
I found my way toward tattooing. It was something that just made sense to me and it seemed like something I could do while going to college. So after many failed attempts at different majors, and colleges, I stayed committed and consistent with my love for tattoos.
At a point through my early 20s, I was taking on a full-time job at a tattoo studio on the south beach doing front desk, offering henna tattoos, dabbling in piercings, and practicing my tattoos on my friends, all while attending school full-time. When the studio I worked at finally hired me as a part-time tattoo artist I found the courage to leave my studies at a nursing college to focus on my passion.
This is where I like to say the real work as an artist began, my art definitely shifted during this time. Tattooing has opened me up to a whole world of what’s possible as an artist. I now work at a great studio in the heart of Wynwood taking in amazing clients, and doing work that I enjoy, with the occasional guest spots here and there.
I also am learning to work with clay and slowly building a home studio to better explore other mediums to further expand my art.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In one way my road felt smooth because this seemed to be my path and calling, as well as what makes me happy as I’ve mentioned earlier, I like to call it the path of least resistance as it’s what my interests led me to.
Meanwhile, there have been many roadblocks to get through during the beginning of my journey that made me question if I was going in the right direction. Things like my family’s misconception of tattoos were a big struggle for a while.
There were some issues with being such a young female artist in a very male dominant industry, these issues looked like less pay, having to work harder to gain trust from clients and coworkers, etc.,
But I truly believe struggles don’t come without any lessons, and possibilities for growth, getting through my beginning years as an apprentice and young artist in the industry really allowed me to gain so much perspective as well as knowledge of myself and others, as well as what I want to bring with me into the industry.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My tattoo work is known for its fine lines and detail. I specialize in fine line black and grey tattoos, I love creating pieces that are as small as 2 inches with immense details and realism.
Although not all my tattoos are focused on realism, when I create larger pieces I am known for creating botanical, and nature-inspired work that flows with the body and is specialized to my client’s body and needs.
Some of the pieces that I am most proud of include a mixture of fine line details that are very dainty and feminine, mixed with more dark, masculine elements. The way I achieve this is by incorporating black-out backgrounds which are basically pure heavy black areas to bring forth the softness of my dainty work.
I think this kind of art that is very balanced between feminine and masculine is most true to me as an artist. I strive to create pieces that are eye-catching and also personal and soul-touching at the same time. Each person I work with has a very different story and I’m here to bring that forward onto the physical body through the process of tattooing.
