Marco Caridad of North Miami on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Marco Caridad. Check out our conversation below.

Marco, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Lately, what’s bringing me joy is spending time outdoors in Vieques—playing pickleball with friends and listening to the coquí at night. Their sound reminds me of the crickets in Caracas, a familiar echo from my childhood.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Marco Caridad, a Venezuelan-American interdisciplinary artist, curator, and Artistic Director of Miami International Fine Arts (MIFA). My work explores identity, queerness, and belonging through painting, performance, and installation, often inviting public participation and dialogue.
I’m also the founder of Biolumina Artist Residency in Vieques, Puerto Rico—an initiative that connects art, ecology, and community. What makes Biolumina special is its commitment to slow, intentional creation: artists live and work surrounded by nature while engaging with the local community through workshops, talks, and collaborative projects.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of feeling powerful was when I stepped onto a stage for the first time at age fourteen. I was performing in The Wizard of Oz with the theater group Titilar at the Centro de Bellas Artes in Maracaibo. I can still remember the lights, the music, and the collective energy flowing between the audience and the performers. It was the moment I understood the transformative power of art.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes, there were several times I almost gave up. Living from what you love and pursuing your dreams isn’t easy—it takes a lot of work and resilience. One of the most challenging moments was when I was working full-time while also completing my master’s degree full-time, all while still learning English. Every Sunday, I felt like giving up. But family support makes all the difference. My husband used to tell me, “Just one more week.” And week after week, I kept going until I finally graduated. Looking back, it was all worth it.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
One project I’m deeply committed to, no matter how long it takes, is Biolumina, the artist residency I’m building in Vieques, Puerto Rico. I bought the property before Hurricane María—it was a small wooden house filled with dreams. The storm took it away, but not the vision behind it. Years later, Biolumina is finally taking shape again, this time in concrete. I can’t wait to see the impact it will have on the island and on my own artistic practice. For me, it’s a project about resilience, community, and the light that art can bring even after devastation.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace when I wake up and see the sea. It reminds me to breathe, to pause, and to simply be present. Over time, I’ve learned that living honestly and staying true to yourself makes life lighter. Peace, for me, comes from that sense of alignment—between who I am, what I create, and how I live.
