Life & Work with William Freeman of Belle Glade

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Freeman

Hi William, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
The concept of People of Purpose began in 2019 when two inspiring women visited the prison where I was incarcerated, discussing the idea of purpose. Motivated by their words, I launched Man of Purpose after my release, determined to avoid returning to prison and to help others do the same. As the initiative grew and involved more people, my board suggested we find a more inclusive name. Thus, People of Purpose was born. This change reflected our broader mission of helping more individuals discover their purpose and stay out of prison.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, with the strongest struggle being financial. Despite this, People of Purpose has made a significant impact, helping over 470 individuals, with only four returning to prison. Additionally, 27 have successfully completed probation, and the remainder are doing very well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an advocate for returning citizens, I work for a harm reduction organization that assists individuals still struggling post-incarceration. I specialize in trauma motivation interview and best peer practices, ensuring each person is understood as they walk out of prison. People of Purpose, my organization, focuses on transforming the lives of these returning citizens.

We’re known for our comprehensive support system, which has helped over 470 individuals, with only four returning to prison. I am most proud of our success in helping 27 individuals complete probation and our ability to provide continuous support for the rest. What sets us apart is our personalized approach and unwavering commitment to each individual’s journey. We emphasize understanding their unique challenges and providing tailored support, which has led to remarkable outcomes and significantly lower recidivism rates.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is our family summer trip. Every year, we would pack up the car and head to a new destination, filled with excitement and anticipation. These trips were a time of bonding, adventure, and discovery. We explored new places, tried different foods, and created lasting memories together. The joy and laughter shared during those summer trips are moments I cherish deeply.
