Life & Work with Tara Iacobucci of Rhode Island

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Iacobucci.

Tara Iacobucci

Hi Tara, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My current world and career began with dance classes at 3 years old. I was very timid, and could not go into a class without my mother present in the corner of the room. Little did we all know that this would become not only my passion, but my career.

My dance training continued on in jazz, ballet and tap to becoming a competitive dancer at an early age. I then switched over to ballet only training around middle school age at Ballet RI, which used to be Festival Ballet of Rhode Island. I was graciously given the role of Clara in their annual Nutcracker Ballet, and went on to dance many other ballets with them. Once college came around, I decided to pursue a degree in Business Management while dancing under contract with Festival Ballet.

Before I was through with college, my childhood friend opened her own studio and asked me to be a part of it with her. I have been with her ever since, at Talent Factory RI. Open for over two decades, I have held the positions of lead educator, head choreographer, dance company director, and director of dance. When I am not at the Talent Factory, I am often traveling on the weekends for dance conventions/competitions.

Through the years, I have danced and created many works for not only the stage, but also for film. I have worked with Verdi Productions, Andy Pellick, and international costume companies. I have premiered work at The Joyce Theatre in New York City, and I have created works on the students at Joffrey Ballet’s Jazz & Contemporary Program. I have been an adjunct professor at Dean College for the past 6 years, and I adore my time with these enthusiastic, talented artists of the next generation. I have visited other collegiate dance programs to teach, as well as many dance studios around the country.

This past winter I created, choreographed, directed and produced my own full length evening of work, “Facets In And Around”. This was an audition based casting call, and quite possibly the most tiring yet fulfilling project I have ever submerged myself in. The sponsors who supported, the audience who opened themselves up to it, and the dancers who dedicated themselves alongside me are all memories I will forever be grateful for.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all times, but I will say…everything works itself out. Every time I run into a bump in the road, or a deadline is approaching, I usually whisper to myself, “See! It does work itself out!”

Some of the struggles along the way have been choosing a Business Management degree over a dance collegiate program. I felt like I was going to be “less than”, but I am not sure that is totally the case. I just did it my way, the best way I knew how to do it at that time, with the support I had.

Another struggle has been the late nights, early mornings to get work done. The time you sacrifice even for your own personal well being because you love this craft just as much as your own self. The time away from family and friends when you chase your dreams. However, never once have I regretted it, and I am thrilled to be able to say that.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a dancer, dance educator, dance choreographer, adjudicator, director and producer.

I mainly specialize in the genres of ballet, jazz, lyrical and contemporary.

I am known for my motivating, enthusiastic attitude as I lead my classroom. I am also known for bringing artistry to my students, not just technique and precision.

I am most proud of all my former students who have gone on to fulfill their dreams, and continue to do so. Working together from Day 1 on a common goal, and then having them reach that goal one at a time, is so fulfilling and humbling. It continues to remind me of why I love what I do, and how I appreciate the reciprocal energy that comes from those truly aligned with you.

I feel what sets me apart from others is my embrace of the individual. Many have told me that no matter what class they take with me, they feel empowered because I allow room for them to be themselves. I allow each dancer/artist to explore their own voice and choices, while still within a framework to hone in on their growth.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice for anyone just starting out would be to run full speed and do not let anyone sway what your gut is telling you. Never think you are better than, for when we are constantly learning and observing, we are becoming more of who we are capable of being. Remember to lead with grace, openness and passion – these are the true pillars that will get you more work and more connections. Your energy is everything, your talent is only part of it. I hope you allow yourself to feel all the little wins and prideful moments along the way, as they are all so very important xx
