Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Flores.
Hi Stephanie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for beauty really started when I was young. I remember going to the salon with my mom and
loving everything about it – the chitchat, the energy, watching the stylists do hair. I was always drawn to
that world.
When I moved to Miami from Jersey, I started doing my friends’ hair for fun in high school. I would do their
eyebrows, cut their hair – honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing. YouTube wasn’t a thing back
then, so there were no tutorials to pull up and follow. I was just figuring it out as I went, but I loved it.
After high school, I went to college for about a year, but I realized pretty quickly that I already knew what I
wanted to do. I wanted to do hair. So I enrolled at Robert Morgan and eventually got a job at Peter of
London, which was actually the salon where I used to get my own hair cut and was a really big name in
Miami at the time. I joined their program, became a hairstylist, and I’ve now been doing hair for about 15
years.
Then 2020 happened. When the pandemic hit and everything shut down, I think a lot of us who are artists
were sitting there thinking, “What do I do now?” My entire career depended on physically being with
people, and suddenly we were all being told to stay home.
Thankfully, my clients are probably just as crazy as I am, because I started getting phone calls like, “Okay,
if you come in proper gear, would you be willing to do my hair? We can do it outside. I’ll make you lunch!”
And somehow, in the middle of all that craziness, I started creating my own schedule, managing my own
clients, and basically running my own book.
That’s when something clicked for me. I remember thinking, “Wait – you can totally run the show here. You
can run your own business. You’re already doing it.” Once things started opening back up, going back to
being managed by someone else just didn’t feel the same anymore. I had gotten a taste of what it felt like
to manage myself, my schedule, and my clients, and I realized I was ready to take that next step.
My best friend was going through a very similar journey around the same time, so in 2020, we decided to
join forces, take a chance on ourselves, open a suite together, and create Haus of Hair.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
definitely hasn’t just been a smooth ride. There are challenges that come with owning any business, and
then there are challenges that come with owning a business with a partner. You’re not always going to
agree on everything. Then there are the everyday things nobody really thinks about when they picture
owning a salon – a leak happens, a client doesn’t show up, your booking program isn’t working, the Wi-Fi
goes down. There are so many little things that suddenly become your responsibility.
And then there are the personal obstacles. Life doesn’t stop just because you own a business. I can only
speak for myself, but one of my biggest challenges has been balancing motherhood with running a
business. Today we see so many women doing both, and I think there’s a much bigger conversation and
support system around it. But even when you have a partner or people supporting you, it can be really
hard to feel like you’re giving 100% to everything when you’re also responsible for this little human being
who needs you.
Those challenges still come and go, but I think my perspective on them has changed. Especially now, in
2026, it feels like such an empowering time for women. We’re realizing more and more that we really are
capable of doing everything – and more. So I don’t necessarily look at challenges as setbacks anymore. I
try to look at them as a push to be better, work harder, and keep growing.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
These days, I would say my specialties are lived-in color and haircuts. Throughout my career, I’ve been
trained extensively in haircutting and precision – understanding the way you angle something, the way the
hair is going to fall, and all of the technical and even mathematical details behind creating a really good
haircut. I love that part of the craft because a small change can completely change the way someone’s
hair moves and looks.
With color, I feel like we’re moving into a world of less maintenance and embracing more natural beauty.
At least that’s what I’m seeing with my clients, and I really thrive in that space because I’ve always felt that
sometimes less is more. That doesn’t mean you can’t change your look or do something that makes you
feel different and beautiful. It’s really about finding that balance.
That’s why I love lived-in color. It’s color that isn’t necessarily right up against the root. It’s softer, more
melted and seamless. It almost looks like maybe you haven’t done your hair in a couple of months – but
nobody can really tell because everything still blends beautifully. Those are the kinds of looks I love
creating.
A lot of my clients are moms, women who are constantly on the go, women who work out, work, travel, or
are really into wellness. You have to be realistic about your hair and how much time you actually want to
spend maintaining it. But they also still want to get pretty.
There’s a fine balance between the two, and I think that’s what I really enjoy helping my clients find. With
the techniques, color, and options we have available to us now, there are so many possibilities for creating
hair that feels beautiful and elevated but still fits into your actual life. When it comes to the salon, I continue to challenge myself to keep my skill set above average and never
stop learning. But just as importantly, I really focus on connecting with my clients.
I think genuine connection is something we’re lacking these days. The world can feel a little lonely. A salon
has always been about more than just hair. Sometimes people come in to feel beautiful, but they also
come in to talk, laugh, vent, or just have someone listen to them.
So if I can give someone a little bit of company and connection, with a side of beauty, then to me, I’m
doing my job.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a pretty shy kid growing up, but I always had a strong interest in the arts and anything creative. It actually started with my Barbie dolls—I was always cutting and painting their hair and changing up their looks.
By high school, I started experimenting with my own hair and my best friends’ hair. At one point, I even had a mohawk! That was really the time when my personality started to blossom. I found confidence through expressing myself creatively. I would thrift, alter and make my own clothes, and constantly change my hair.
Looking back, hair and personal style were really some of the first ways I learned to express myself and step outside of my shell. That creativity eventually became such a big part of who I am and, ultimately, my career.
