Life & Work with Stacy McFarlane of Doral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy McFarlane.

Stacy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As a child, I found myself trying to help all the homeless animals. My family went from never owning a pet to having a variety of strays at home. This is when I realized, I wanted to make a change and help the ones who couldn’t speak for themselves. I attended William H. Turner Technical Arts High School where I graduated with a focus on veterinary medicine. I was accepted to Cornell University where I met fabulous people and phenomenal professors who helped fuel my inner passion to work and care for animals. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science, too, therefore, continue my pursuit of becoming a veterinarian and helping animals worldwide. I was accepted to Ross University, School of Veterinary Medicine, where I continued my veterinary education. I lived in the Caribbean for 2.5 years where many of my colleagues and locals had dogs. The island itself had minimal resources for pampering pets other than dog food. I wanted more for them. I began trying some recipes for dog treats and eventually used my vet school nutritional background to help create the healthiest yet yummiest treat. I tried the idea of making homemade dog treats that were healthy and safe since most dogs there got table scraps as treats. It was a hit, people loved the idea, I began to partner with an adoption center on the island, where students would buy the treats for the dogs at their shelter! I moved back to the states where I finished my last year of vet school at the University of Florida. During this time, I pondered the idea of bringing my healthy, organic, preservative-free dog treats to the states. So, I started Doggie Bakery Miami, with the vision to have people around the states give their dogs treats that are healthy, preservative-free, and homemade by us! In the last year, our bakery has grown quickly and we have been able to spoil hundreds of pups. We have introduced everything from training treats, to cupcakes, customized birthday cakes, party packages, birthday photoshoots, and more! We hope to continue to grow and create many more healthy and delicious dog products. We want nothing but the best for your dog’s health, so we stay up to date on current ingredients that benefit their overall well-being. We are your 5-star bakery and hope to continue to serve pups in South Florida as well as all over the US.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At first, it was tough, trying to finish vet school and run a new business was certainly not easy. I found myself overwhelmed from time to time but would always pull through. Once I graduated, I moved back down to Miami, where most of my family lives. They can help fill in where needed. Ever since then, thankfully things have been smooth thus far. We can say we have challenges as new products are created but that is with any business! It’s always a learning curve!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I graduated from vet school in January 2019, where I have worked as a large animal veterinarian in Homestead, Fl. What I believe sets us apart from others, is that we formulate all our treats with professional advice, our handmade treats are made to enhance the pup’s health. We work to help create treats that won’t give an upset stomach or cause further allergies. We also want to help make birthday parties unforgettable. We have partnered with various dog companies in South Florida to make all our services the best they can be. Our dog photographer Sonia is great, our dog hotels are fabulous, our dog gear companies are awesome, our clients are simply amazing and our goals are endless. We are excited about what the future holds.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness is being able to wake up to help animals at work and home. Knowing we are making a positive difference in the nutrition of our furry friends. Having the knowledge to help spoil a pup on their birthday or any accomplishment. Learning makes me happy, whether it’s about a better surgical technique or an ingredient that helps shine a pup’s haircoat. Endless information that will help me, help a paw (or hoof) friend. Feeding my fur baby our treats and seeing his allergies fade away, brings me happiness. In a nutshell, having the ability to help an animal at work or at the bakery, makes me happy! Not to forget, all the support and love from my friends, family, clients, and furfriends. We couldn’t do it without you!
