Today we’d like to introduce you to SLWJMZ.
Hi SLWJMZ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born in Miami, I was abused by my mother terribly, and ran away at 14 to embark on finally meeting my dad again and living with him. My mother kept us away from him to push favored outcomes amongst her peers, and for financial gain. That’s where I found my voice, most people especially in the black community, tend to overlook abuse from the mothers, and often it’s expected due to societal factors. “Dont talk back”, “that’s still your mother”…. After many DCF cases, and getting to my fathers, my voice did not stop there. A few years prior, I spent middle school and some high school at an all girl academy, YWPA, where they had a strict academic program that included MacBook usage, and I was able to give my voice a home. Well a garage lol, it was GarageBand. I’ve been engineering in GarageBand since I was 11 years old. Arriving to my dads at 14, going on 15 I began to upload songs to SoundCloud and I started using my first Nikon camera to make some money. Amongst my journey, I did school hop a lot always leaving myself to be the “new” girl until I graduated 12th grade finally. Around 18, I was getting really popular online for being one of the earliest girls to hang with “rappers” from my area in Miami, that blew up in 2015/2016. A lot of my sounds had garnered more attention from there and who I hung with at such an early age had a lot of people waiting for something big to happen. I got my first TV role on the OWN network for the show Queen Sugar, and published in bigger music videos while still putting out my own music. I doubled as a video vixen, funny enough I was able to navigate the music industry through my modeling portfolio faster for my ability to act. Being nervous of my fame crashing with my traditional mundane life, I dropped out of college twice, because I could not explain to my professors the last minute passion the industry needs from me at times. Over time I became more and more oooular online for appearing on Fresh&Fit, Valuetainment and gracing videos that were played and paid by SONY, UMG, etc. My freestyles were going so viral I couldn’t even imagine the limits for the next release. I’ve had 100k management, CleanFace and other recognized management teams approach me for career progression. In 2021, I lost my siblings that were still under my moms care, to abuse and suicide. In 2021 my ex, Jason Campbell was gunned down and shot. In 2021, I was grazed at an event in Wynwood, where my other friends were shot. Some were shot in the eye, some in their feet and some in their chest. 2021 was a rough year for me, and I dug into my creativity harder as I felt God was designing something special for me. 2023 “Fantasy Girl” was released and has pulled in 200k+ streams. Fantasy Girlis my story to me being in the limelight, strip club, while reminding the audience I’m not just a fantasy for entertainment as I have dealt with very traumatic events. I engineer, produce beats and direct my own videos
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle had to be, being lumped in with a lot of horrible female rappers and internet rappers. It was cool during the blog era, like 2009/2008 to just get creative online… now it feels like a fricking endless curriculum with a class full of dummies! Everyone thinks 4k reels, and being goofy is the way to go.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m most known for my music videos. And they are very creative. Every video is a like an amusement park. There’s so much to look at and take in every second
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Try to get a team or a group of friends, or at least ONE person to ride with you, that have your back. Look around, all the clowns have a circus. Just don’t be the clown per say.
And don’t quit your day job, there’s no money in the beginning and everyone will try to overcharge you for swag.
And be different! The freestyle or song you have that’s not really the “thing” is missing from the game!
