Life & Work with Paul N. Afrooz, MD

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul N. Afrooz, MD.

Hi Dr. Afrooz, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always known that I wanted to be a plastic surgeon, and I’ve had incredible mentors that have encouraged me on this journey. As the son of a physician, taking care of people has always been at the forefront of my mind, but I also sought a craft that capitalizes on my artistic and aesthetic perspective. Through my aesthetic plastic surgery practice, I not only enhance my patients’ appearance but also restore their confidence. I’m proud to say that my practice has organically grown to become a global destination for deep plane facelifts, deep neck lifts, and rhinoplasty (both primary and revisionary).

I was born in Ohio and completed my undergraduate studies at Cornell University, and received my medical degree from the Chicago Medical School. I completed my plastic surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh, one of the top plastic surgery residencies in the world. Upon graduation from PITT, I was selected to be the inaugural fellow at the Dallas Plastic Surgery Institute where I spent a year exclusively performing aesthetic surgery of the face and body.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road that has led me to this point has been far from smooth. Still, I wouldn’t change a thing about my journey because I’ve learned and grown with every obstacle I’ve faced. Developing my solo practice in the crowded Miami plastic surgery market has required that I stay true to my mission: to deliver the highest level of care, a seamless patient experience, and world-class results in facial aesthetic surgery and rejuvenation. There are plenty of competitors who offer less invasive procedures and steep discounts or who are louder on social media, but I haven’t let these tactics influence how we do things in my practice. Fortunately, my patients are very discerning, savvy and well-researched, and they aren’t distracted by these things either. Rather, they conduct extensive research and understand that plastic surgery is a serious investment that shouldn’t be compromised. Resisting fads and shortcuts is what sets my practice apart and I’m grateful to the patients who recognize and appreciate our genuine care and effort.

The Covid-19 pandemic presented a whole new set of challenges, as well. Aesthetic surgery was temporarily suspended and travel restrictions prevented many out-of-town patients from traveling to our office in Miami. Fortunately, we were able to resume operations, with some precautionary modifications, relatively quickly and we began offering virtual consultations—an efficient approach that we’ve continued to offer to patients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon specializing in aesthetic surgery of the face and neck. More specifically, my practice has become a global destination for deep plane facelifts, deep neck lifts, brow lifts, and primary and revisionary rhinoplasty. Our medspa also offers less invasive treatments such as injectables, Botox, facials, peels, PRP, and SkinPen, as well as clinical grades skincare products like Obagi and SkinMedica.

Operating on the face and neck is especially high stakes plastic surgery because results are impacted by mere millimeters and there is no margin for error. For example, my deep plane facelift and neck lift involves a dual-pronged approach whereby I independently re-drape and resuspend the superficial layer of skin as well as the underlying muscular infrastructure known as the “SMAS”, and I also often work in the deeper layers of the neck to remove unwanted fullness which otherwise causes unwanted sagging and volume in the neck. I also take the extra step of harvesting fat and performing fat grafting to restore youthful volume to the face. This dual-pronged approach to my deep face and neck lift is arduous and exhaustive, but this extra investment of time and effort yields extraordinary and long-lasting results. After all, shortcuts in surgery (as in life) yield short-lived results and thus are best avoided.

My natural intensity, focus, and craftsmanship serve me well in the operating room, and it’s during these longer face and neck cases when I’m especially grateful for the support of my talented team of surgical assistants, nurses, and anesthesia providers.

While the craft of plastic surgery falls primarily in the realm of science and medicine, as an aesthetic facial surgeon, I’m thankful to be able to capitalize on my lifelong appreciation of design and art. In another life, if I weren’t a plastic surgeon, I’d be a rock ‘n roll guitarist or fashion designer.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We’ve all witnessed how the Covid-19 pandemic has inundated healthcare workers, hospitals, and the supply chain with an unprecedented set of challenges. Aesthetic surgery was temporarily suspended in Florida and travel restrictions prevented many out-of-town patients from visiting our office in Miami. Fortunately, we were able to resume operations relatively quickly because we didn’t have to rely on hospital OR access as we have an AAAA-accredited operating suite within our office. Plus, some of the precautions and best practices we adopted in response to the pandemic have ultimately improved the patient experience in the long run. For example, we’ve implemented strict sanitation protocols, strengthened our inventory management in anticipation of supply shortages and delivery delays, and we began offering virtual consultations which has proved to be a creative and efficient approach that we’ve continued to offer to our out-of-town patients.

Though it wasn’t initially the case, Covid-19 has ultimately increased the demand for plastic surgery, particularly facial plastic surgery, in large part because of the “Zoom culture” that dominated remote workdays. As our faces (and necks) are reflected back to us more than ever due to constant virtual meetings, we can’t help but notice aspects of our appearance that belie our true age and aesthetics. We’ve specifically experienced an increased demand for facelifts, neck lifts, rhinoplasties, and blepharoplasty. There also seems to be increased demand from patients who either experienced a profound life change or perspective change during quarantine. Some of these people have decided that they’ll no longer postpone things that they feel would enhance their quality of life. Ultimately people are emerging from this pandemic with a renewed dedication to self-fulfillment, and we are fortunate to be in the business of making people feel more confident about themselves and their future.
