Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Val.
Hi Patricia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started at a young age by participating in music classes at school. I grew interested in wanting to learn to play certain musical instruments and taking vocal classes. I participated in chorus and band classes between junior high and high school and would participate in school performances. I continued my musical journey while attending Florida International University pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
While in college, I began working with various global solo artists and bands in the Creole/Konpa/Zouk market, working in the studio and on stage. After college, my interest grew in the Reggae market, and decided to add another genre to my music list. I continued to work with various producers and global musical artists in the Reggae market, as well as performing with Reggae bands performing at various events in South Florida.
I spent nearly 7 years performing with JeanPJam, a reggae band, performing at the popular and formerly Purdy Lounge on weekly reggae nights on South Beach. During one of my performances, I met a producer from Kreyol Music who was interested in working to further my musical journey as a solo artist. He brought the idea of incorporating the Creole language into songs that would be produced for me.
I liked the idea and said let’s do it. We began working on a few singles and features. We later decided to enter an agreement to work on a few albums. In October of 2019, we released an album titled “J’ai Un Secret,” which contains 11 songs in the style of various genres like Afrobeat, Konpa, Zouk, Reggae, Rasin, and more. We also released music videos of songs from the album titled “Let me Be” and “Sonje.”
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When trying to achieve certain goals, there will be hurdles along the way because trying to reach some level of success is not easy. It takes a lot of dedication, time, integrity, commitment, and patience to keep the journey going. Some of the struggles are working extended times in the studio to make sure everything is done properly and in a timely fashion.
Sometimes finding the right talented individuals like photographers, musicians, visual artists, etc was sometimes a challenge because you always want to work with people who know what they are doing and who are professional. Sometimes coming to an agreement on certain things on a project can be a challenge. I’m open to different perspectives on something that needs to be agreed upon if it makes sense and will help strengthen some areas of opportunity.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Haitian-American singer, songwriter, and model. I specialize mostly in the music and songwriting areas. To learn more about my work, you can check out my releases on music platforms like Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, and others. You can learn about the different unique rhythms, languages, and sounds of Haiti incorporated into my album.
I’ve participated in other areas of art like acting and have been out of the modeling and acting business for a while and decided to revisit that journey so I’m looking forward to seeing where that goes. I am most known for my music and live performances. I am most proud of the consistency and dedication given to my music over the years and as well as my recent album release.
This is the first time I have released an album as a solo artist so it’s a good feeling. What sets me apart from others is that I stay true to myself and who I am and never try to fit in.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the different cultures that are presented in the city. I love the different restaurants, lounges, events, and beach life! I love the different views and the palm trees that are everywhere. What I’m starting to like the least is the rush hour traffic.
