Life & Work with Neco Kafruni of Doral

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neco Kafruni.

Hi Neco, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a Venezuelan-Lebanese multidisciplinary artist who immigrated to the US a little before my 15th birthday. As an immigrant, there are many integral part of growing up that change, due to adapting to a new environment, a new language, as well as, leaving behind everything I knew to be true.
Because I was so focused on surviving, I often neglected taking a pause to catch my breath, and to see how much I had accomplished.
My art practice has allowed me to reconnect with that part of me that I didn’t know had been silenced for so long. Allowing the voice of that child come through adult me, has pushed me to build bridges that connect my child-like joy to this world

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe if we really care about something, the road is rarely 100% smooth. Maybe initially we get that momentum where the entire world conspires to help us, but after that, it is a continuous battle to believe in ourselves; specially when things don’t work exactly the way we planned them.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a multidisciplinary artist, I allow my voice to be heard through many different mediums, depending on what serves me best at that moment. I utilize photography, video art, painting, sculpture, and installation accordingly, and in many instances, I merge them together.
Lately I have welcomed to this world my Bobs; a series of wide-mouth silly creatures that capture joy, play, as well as serve as companions. Last year I wanted people to be able to exit amongst them, and was able to create an installation composed of soft sculptures that allowed children and adults from all ages alike to remember the joy of being alive and silly.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I have so many beautiful memories, but when I was little, whenever I wanted to get dressed up for a contest or carnaval, my mom would whip out all the glitter she could find, and develop sewing skills she didn’t have before, just so that I could look like the character that I wanted to resemble. Some of my favorite memories are of me in a costume. Some times I was the Little Mermaid, or Starfire from Teen Titans, or Tiger from Winnie Pooh, but I was always fabulous! My parents and aunties made sure I slayed every performance ever!
