Life & Work with Natalia Manrique of Miami

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalia Manrique.

Hi Natalia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
NaMa Native Landscapes was founded in 2018 by my partner, Mauricio Gonzalez, and me, out of a shared desire to challenge conventional landscaping and offer a more thoughtful, sustainable alternative. My background in nonprofit arts and community work, combined with Mauricio’s training in fine arts, horticulture, and arboriculture, shaped how we see landscapes—not as decorative backdrops, but as living systems where ecology, culture, and everyday life intersect.

Living and working in South Florida, we witnessed firsthand the environmental and economic damage caused by water-intensive, non-native landscapes. That experience pushed us to focus on protecting Florida’s native ecosystems while expanding green areas within highly dense, environmentally degraded urban spaces in Miami. Through intentional plant selection, ecological design, and water-efficient practices, we help transform overlooked or impacted sites into resilient landscapes that support biodiversity and long-term ecological health.

That philosophy naturally expanded beyond design and installation with the creation of Flora of Miami, our native plant garden center and community hub. Flora of Miami grew from a desire to make native plants more accessible and to create a welcoming space for learning, conversation, and connection. Together, NaMa Native Landscapes and Flora of Miami reflect our ongoing commitment to protecting South Florida’s landscapes—one garden, one project, and one relationship at a time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been smooth—building a business focused on native landscaping comes with its unique challenges. One of the biggest hurdles has been changing perceptions: many people still equate beautiful landscapes with exotic or high-maintenance plants, so part of our work is constantly educating clients about the value and beauty of Florida’s native ecosystems.

Logistics and sourcing can also be tricky. Native plants are often harder to find in quantity, and each site has its own set of challenges—from soil conditions to water availability—that require creative problem-solving. Balancing the design vision with ecological needs and practical maintenance is something we navigate on every project.

There’s also the challenge of running a business that’s deeply values-driven. Sustainability, education, and long-term ecological impact don’t always align with conventional timelines or budgets, so it takes patience and persistence to stay true to our mission.

That said, every challenge has been an opportunity to learn, grow, and connect more deeply with our clients and our community. Seeing a native landscape thrive, attracting wildlife, and bringing joy to a space makes every obstacle worthwhile.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We see our work as a form of art that extends beyond traditional canvases—it’s about shaping living landscapes that are both beautiful and ecologically meaningful. But unlike a painting, this canvas is a living organism that grows, shifts, and evolves over time. This approach has deepened our appreciation for the seasonality of South Florida. Even when plants are dormant, they contribute to an intriguing palette and texture that tells a story in every season.

We are creators, and our brush is time and patience. Our colors are the magical surprises native plants have to offer, and our canvas is your garden space. Each project is a collaboration with nature itself, where creativity meets ecological understanding, and where every detail—big or small—has the potential to inspire and delight.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, we’re focused on expanding the ways we can support both people and ecosystems. One area we’ve seen growing demand for is specialized garden maintenance—ensuring that native landscapes continue to thrive long after installation. We’re excited to offer services that go beyond basic upkeep, helping clients understand their gardens, optimize ecological function, and enjoy the full beauty and resilience of native plants over time.
