Life & Work with Melissa Marino of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Marino.

Hi Melissa, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful growth comes from the challenges we don’t choose.

Five years ago, I moved to Florida and essentially started over. Building a life and career in a new place meant creating a client base, community, and support system from the ground up. It was exciting, but it was also one of the biggest leaps of faith I’ve ever taken.

At the same time, I was raising two daughters and working to create a stable, fulfilling life for our family. Balancing entrepreneurship and motherhood has been one of the greatest challenges of my life, but it has also been one of my greatest motivations. My children have inspired me to keep going during seasons when giving up would have been easier.

Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced financial uncertainty, burnout, self-doubt, and the constant pressure of building a business while managing family responsibilities. The beauty industry can be incredibly rewarding, but it also requires resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to keep evolving.

Over the last few years, I’ve experienced significant personal challenges that forced me to reevaluate my life, my priorities, and the direction of my business. There were moments when I felt like I was rebuilding everything from the ground up—not just professionally, but personally as well. Navigating those experiences while raising two children on my own and continuing to show up for my clients taught me more about strength than any business course ever could.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning to trust myself enough to pivot. After spending more than a decade as a hairstylist, stepping into permanent makeup, writing, and other creative ventures required me to become a beginner again. That can be uncomfortable, but it has also been incredibly rewarding.

Today, I view challenges differently than I once did. Every obstacle I’ve faced—from moving across the country, rebuilding my business, and raising two daughters as a single mother to navigating personal hardships and reinventing my career—has shaped the person and professional I’ve become. Those experiences taught me resilience, compassion, and the courage to keep growing even when the path forward isn’t clear.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that transformation isn’t something that happens once. It’s a lifelong process, and often our greatest struggles become the foundation for our greatest purpose.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road.

Five years ago, I moved to Florida and essentially started over. I left behind my established clientele and support system and had to build everything from scratch in a new state. At the same time, I was raising my two daughters and trying to create a stable life and future for our family.

There were plenty of moments when I questioned myself. Building a business is challenging enough, but doing it while navigating major life changes and raising children on your own can feel overwhelming at times. I’ve experienced financial struggles, personal setbacks, burnout, and periods where I felt like I was rebuilding every part of my life at once.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth often requires you to become a beginner again. After spending more than a decade as a hairstylist, I decided to expand into permanent makeup and pursue other creative passions, including writing. Starting something new is exciting, but it’s also humbling. There are no guarantees, and you have to be willing to learn, make mistakes, and trust yourself.

Looking back, I can honestly say the challenges shaped me more than the successes. They taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of continuing to move forward even when the outcome isn’t clear.

Today, I feel more aligned with my purpose than ever. My work has evolved beyond simply providing beauty services. Whether I’m behind the chair, creating permanent makeup, or writing journals and workbooks focused on personal growth, my goal is the same: helping people feel empowered through transformation.

The road hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t change it. Every challenge helped shape the woman, mother, artist, and entrepreneur I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I feel like what I offer is more than just beauty services or following trends. It’s transformation from the inside out. It’s also about offering real human connection, not just superficiality.

I specialize in helping people navigate life changes through their aesthetics. Sometimes that looks like a dramatic hair color, a fresh set of brows, cheek blushing, or another confidence-boosting beauty service. Other times, it’s supporting someone through a major life transition and helping them reconnect with themselves through the way they see themselves.

What I’m most known for is creating highly customized transformations. I don’t believe beauty is one-size-fits-all. Every client has a unique story, personality, and energy, and I love creating work that reflects who they are rather than simply chasing trends.

I’ve continued to remain a student of my industry because I believe there’s always more to learn. It allows me to provide the best service possible while staying curious and growing as an artist. It also keeps me humble, which I think is important in an industry that can sometimes focus too heavily on appearances.

In addition to my work behind the chair and in the PMU studio, I’m also a writer and creator. I’m currently developing journals and workbooks focused on resilience, healing, self-discovery, and personal growth. Writing has become another way for me to help people move through transformation, just in a different form.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a specific service or achievement—it’s the fact that I’ve continued to evolve. Over the years I’ve reinvented myself multiple times, expanded my skills, rebuilt my business, and continued pursuing work that feels meaningful and aligned with who I am.

I think what sets me apart is that I see beauty as a catalyst for empowerment. Whether someone sits in my chair for hair, permanent makeup, or engages with my writing, my goal is the same: to help them feel more confident, more authentic, and more connected to themselves.

At the end of the day, I don’t see myself as just a hairstylist, PMU artist, or writer. I see myself as a transformational artist, helping people step into the next version of themselves.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was definitely a goofy, nerdy kid growing up. I loved making people laugh, and I’ve always had a curious personality. I absolutely loved reading and learning about anything that interested me. I could easily lose myself in a good book for hours.

I was also fascinated by beauty and creativity from a young age. I devoured my mom’s fashion magazines, and if anyone would let me, I was giving them a makeover. Looking back, it’s funny to realize that some of the things I do professionally today started as childhood interests.

I wasn’t really into sports or large social groups. I would have much rather been riding my bike, doing arts and crafts, drawing, writing, or diving into a fantasy novel. I’ve always been someone who enjoys creating things and using my imagination.

In a lot of ways, I don’t think I’ve changed all that much. I’m still curious, still creative, still a little nerdy, and still passionate about helping people feel good about themselves. The difference is that now I’ve found ways to turn those interests into a career and a purpose.
