Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Bloomberg.
Hi Maya, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am born and raised in Baltimore, MD (go Ravens!) and attended the University of Miami for both undergrad and graduate school, where I met my husband, Drew. We have been together since 2007 and have 3 beautiful children (#twinmom) and our furbaby Jessiedoodle.
I am a Hematology Nurse Practitioner specializing in sickle cell disease and hemophilia/congenital bleeding disorders. Sickle cell disease is the greatest health and racial disparity in modern medicine. I personally witnessed the disparities within the first week of my job after seeing the stark difference in treatments, attitudes, and care between the two populations I serve.
During the pandemic, there was SO much misinformation online that I wanted to find a creative way to debunk these myths to help improve health outcomes. I went to art school for 8 years and have knack for simplifying complex topics, which ultimately led me to create my instagram page @theHemeNP which has blossomed into a reliable spot for hematology tips and chronic illness support. Not only is it an amazing creative outlet, but I have the privilege of connecting with thousands of warriors worldwide and empower them with information to advocate for themselves and their health!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As with anything, there is a learning curve and setbacks when trying to accomplish our goals. However, I believe when something is rooted in passion with the purpose of serving, it will always be successful. The key is to view struggles as learning opportunities to fulfill our bigger mission and goals in life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Healthcare Provider/Creator. I have specialized in Classical Hematology for the past 9 years, with specific focus on sickle cell disease and congenital bleeding disorders (ex hemophilia and von willebrand disease).
I take pride in the relationships I have built over these years, which allows me to get my patients what they need regardless of the hurdles. I am patient-centered and pro-nursing and use my voice to advocate, educate and raise awareness of sickle cell, chronic pain, and rare bleeding disorders.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
My apps and podcasts are more to help me stay grounded and relieve anxiety which I suppose indirectly helps me accomplish what I need to do.
