Today, we’d like to introduce you to Marketa Gajdosova.
Hi, Marketa; thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am originally from the Czech Republic. However, I spent half of my college academic life in the USA, and the finale has brought me to Miami, where I am completing my final year at Florida International University, majoring in Nutrition and Dietetics. I have always wanted to study this field abroad, at leading faculties because I was never satisfied with the level of nutritional sciences in the Czech Republic. I have previously studied in Los Angeles and started university studies at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. FIU was my plan A and ultimate dream. It is an incredible honor to be part of such a top-notch program and to learn from the best.
Interestingly, I never wanted to go to Miami for the place but for the study. It is sometimes so demanding that I don’t get anything from Miami. I dedicate all my time to truly becoming the best professional knowledge-wise. The entire study at FIU is a huge challenge. It requires a 24/7 commitment and has very high demands, which are difficult to endure. However, it is a life opportunity that makes me the best dietitian I want to become. My priority is to bring these standards and knowledge back to Europe and thus change the field level in the Czech Republic.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been everything but easy. Looking back on it, I don’t think I would have the strength to go through that again. Whenever I tell someone I live and study in Miami, they imagine it as the ultimate dream life. But no one sees the reality of what it entails and the price I pay for it. It meant giving up 99% of my ‘normal’ life and missing it day by day.
Living abroad as an international student is immensely challenging. You have to operate with different standards. Additionally, you are forced to think in a foreign language 24/7, meet demanding academic standards, live on the other side of the world, and coordinate time differences between Europe and the USA. Generally, you are under huge pressure all the time. Everyone who has ever studied abroad has my utmost respect.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like to say that Miami is not just a city but a lifestyle. It has won my heart. I love its weather, atmosphere, people, and the overall opportunities. I think it has everything. From beautiful beaches to breathtaking views and a hop away from beautiful nature.
What I don’t like are the distances. Nothing is compactly together; everything requires a longer car journey. But that’s not something I perceive as outright negative.
