Today we’d like to introduce you to Maritsa Campos.
Hi Maritsa, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My acting journey began when I was 15 and living in New York. I have always been drawn to the Entertainment industry since I was young. I participated in pageants as a kid in Brazil, did theatre and some photoshoots. When I was 15 I heard a commercial for an acting workshop being held in NYC. Somehow I convinced my mother, who didn’t speak English at the time, to sign me up! During the classes, I remember just feeling like I was right at home. Not long after, our family moved back to South Florida and I just focused on school. As time passed by, my attention turned into the responsibilities of adulthood. It wasn’t until after the pandemic that I felt I was stuck career wise in my day job. I knew my passion was elsewhere. So I went online and searched nearby acting classes and that’s when I stumbled upon Kim Houston Acting Studios and got that same at-home feeling. After that, I made a Backstage profile and applied for local gigs. Was able to meet some incredible people in the industry, including the Nunez brothers, with whom I worked on my first movie! So far under my belt I have a small part in a student film, two movies, and some amazing friends I’ve made along the way! I continue to take classes when I can, and will soon be working on a third film (fingers crossed!).
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has definitely not been smooth. In south Florida I definitely find it more challenging to find roles in TV and film, but not impossible! They’re not playing when they say auditioning really builds thick skin. Out of 100 no’s, you might get a yes. But it’s all part of the journey!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actress and what I love most about my career is that I get to do what I love! And I know that sounds corny, but it’s true. To be able to bring a character to life with your own life experiences and imagination is truly exciting! Right now, I don’t think I’m known for anything in particular, yet (haha). Though I am very proud of my work! And how much I continue to learn and grow. I think what sets me apart is that there’s no other me. My creativity is mine, my imagination, face and skills are mine. In this industry you learn a lot from others, but you make it your own, in your own way.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
An advice I have for networking is to be courteous. Be authentic and put yourself out there. Ask questions, be curious. Be open-minded and always willing to learn. Also have discernment to know what’s for you. Make and cherish connections. That’s what has worked well for me so far.
