Today we’d like to introduce you to Luisa Londono.
Hi Luisa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I became a mother in 2017, I retired from the auto industry where I built a career for 13 years. Although going from Finance to Jewelry can be seem like apposite poles, I was already coming from a world of luxury and providing top-notch customer experience, so adding my love for jewelry and my passion for creating made the whole transition possible and fun, mostly.
Oro By Lu was born in 2019, after changing gears, learning design, e-commerce, and about the fine materials, metals, and stones we use, knocking on many doors (dodging some so they wouldn’t hit me!), and most of all keeping the pieces true to who I am as a designer and as a Latin woman.
Our forte is to do custom designs, not only because we often exceed clients’ expectations, but also because seeing a unique finished piece that started on paper is one of the most rewarding things we do.
My goal is for our clients to feel proud of their jewelry, confident of its quality and that their individual style and life is showcased through my pieces.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Balancing motherhood – having two young children – being a wife and wearing as many hats as possible in my business is a never-ending challenge, but one that teaches me and makes me grow stronger in the process. I learned quick and the hard way how opportunistic and unfair the business and people in it can be, those lessons didn’t come without financial loss from bad inventory and pieces that didn’t work as expected, I had to regroup and find my own path, my own way, and so I did and still do, in fact, I am now diving deeper into learning about certification of stones, rebranding to a more edgy approach (coming soon!) and trusting more my intuitions and less the ever-changing trends.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I believe that the center of what I do, even though it can seem like merely materialistic, really comes from the heart. When I create a piece, regardless of the budget, I try to immerse myself on the feelings the client is looking for when she or he would wear Oro By Lu. I want my pieces to be an extension of one’s personality, style, or experiences. I love mixing glamourous and classic styles with a dash of rock and roll. I like my jewelry to be refined and luxurious while making you feel a bit of a rebel and not a trend follower. I’m proud of being able to dream or imagine a piece and take it from there to a reality. A piece that can produce feelings and tell a story.
What does success mean to you?
This can be cliche or even cheesy for some, but to me success is directly related to happiness. True happiness. I have learned that although reaching financial goals is very important and helpful, true success for me comes from the ability of waking up every day knowing I am about to do something that I love, something that will help others, and something that will take me closer to my short- and long-term goals.
