Life & Work with Krystal Ramos of Miami / South Florida

Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Ramos.

Hi Krystal, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started writing music after holding onto an ex-boyfriend’s bass because he owed me money. Life is funny like that. Through that, I met bandmates and began playing in local bands, eventually finding my home with Hijas De La Muerte. Writing songs and short stories naturally evolved into writing scripts, and over time, storytelling became just as important to me as music. When my current partner began creating music videos for HDLM, I was inspired to start making shorts and experimenting creatively alongside him; Ultimately leading to the creation of Monster Camera Creative, Inc.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think each band I’ve been a part of has had its ups and downs… Working with creatives, there can always be some friction for many reasons… Maybe everyone has a different creative voice, or as we get older, someone’s heart isn’t in it anymore. I think the same can be said for all kinds of artforms. There have been actors I absolutely love working with, and some I might not reach out to again… but I think being polite and professional is all we can do during these struggles.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a musician and filmmaker, and I believe I specialize in creating emotionally driven work with interesting characters that are tragically flawed and relatable. I am proud that I was able to write and shoot a short film in 7 months… and that I was able to start diving into more avenues to express myself.

I think that what I’m most proud of lately though, is bringing together different creative voices and turning that into something meaningful. I’ve met many amazing people on this journey and I hope I get to continue creating on larger sets with them.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
For music? My dad and my mom. They were always musically inclined and I inherited that from them. Also my bandmates. They have been with me through some pretty dark times and I can’t begin to imagine how my life would be without them. We went to SXSW two years ago and that has been one of my lifelong dreams come true.

For filmmaking? My boyfriend, Nathan. He is a huge inspiration for me. He introduced me to FilmGate Miami and Arts Accelerator, which are incredible resources for local filmmakers, and he’s helped me with editing and giving me the confidence to direct on my own. Now we have started a business together, and I am truly excited to see where it goes.
