Today we’d like to introduce you to Jorge Oviedo.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started to take pictures when I was very young in my house in Colombia with my grandfather; he was a Cuban Photographer and Publicist and was always designing logos and creating different labels and images.
After high school, I studied Marketing and Advertising in Colombia and got a technical degree. In that University program, we had a photography class then I started to take pictures more organized and with more dedication. I traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to study photography and dedicated all my time to learning about photography and how to use this to work in advertising campaigns.
After 2 years, I came back to Colombia where I began to shoot for different magazines and advertising agencies as well as for different clients. For the last 2 years, I have been working in Miami on editorials and advertising campaigns for the United States and Latin America.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think it has been a road with different moments and different situations, with a lot of experiences and much learning. When I started to take pictures and work with magazines and advertising agencies it was difficult to get the opportunities to show my work and style, but once they gave me the opportunity I was really happy and determined to do the best I could with each project and with the opportunities.
My confidence started to be bigger and that helped me to grow and develop my photography. I think that something like photography, and art in general, is always a struggle that helps people to develop their style and career and helps to grow and make changes in the best possible way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a photographer and work for editorials and advertising campaigns. My type of photography is Lifestyle and Portraits. I create natural images with a lot of color and with different approaches and visuals. I always try to create different images for each project.
Everything starts with an idea from you or from others and you have to make it real with the angles, the light, and your point of view. I’m always trying to do the best for my projects, introducing different scenes, with different visual angles, but always maintaining my style and type of photography.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I have learned that whatever happens, if you are really compromised and passionate about your art and work, no matter what the difficulties are, you always have to keep trying and learning, looking to get the best of each project and develop new techniques and creative processes.
I love the first moment when the project comes to me and I start thinking about the light, the colors, and all the aspects in order to create something really striking for my client. I have also learned that I am part of a team and have to be open to hearing other people’s opinions and ideas; that’s why I love to be involved with a lot of creative people with different backgrounds.
