Life & Work with Jirah Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jirah Wilson.

Jirah Wilson

Hi Jirah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I was a lost eighteen-year-old. Once college football was out of the picture I had a real identity crisis for a few months after high school.

But I’ve always had a love for editing videos, and I started to see how important and profitable short-form content was becoming.

So I began reaching out to a ton of potential clients, did free work for a bunch of them, and built a name for myself as an editor then quickly got my first ten paying clients signed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I was first getting started, I only had clients on a month-to-month retainer. Which meant they could cancel on me at any time and that’d give me some anxiety and force me to work harder every day.

But pretty soon after that, I switched my business model to three-month retainers and the majority of my clients stayed. Some even paid for the entire three-month contract upfront!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a short-form and long-form video editor, more short-form these days as it’s less time-consuming.

In my market, I’m known for quick turnaround time and making the creative process easy. I don’t just edit their videos; I advise them on what’s trending, writing up scripts, making thumbnails, and recommending gear to improve their content.

I’m proud of the fact that I’ve been able to build such a strong foundation for myself in such a short amount of time. I’ve been in business for four months and I’m able to help provide for myself and my family. It’s truly a blessing.

What sets me apart from everyone is that I bring more value to my clients than a typical editor would. A lot of editors just listen to orders and just edit, while I actually work side by side with my creators and voice my opinion on what I think would help improve their content.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Definitely communication skills. I know there are probably editors out there who’re probably more skilled than I am but because they lack communication skills their talent is wasted because they can’t go cold DM or cold email a random influencer and turn that person into a client like I can.
