Hi Jennifer, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Understated E Boutique was founded by two friends from the Caribbean who shared a love for fashion and a mission to make women feel confident every day. What started as a passion project has grown into an online boutique dedicated to offering effortless, everyday style. We select versatile pieces that blend modern trends with timeless appeal — all crafted to help women look and feel their best. Our goal is simple: to bring confidence, comfort, and chic style to every woman’s wardrobe, wherever she is.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No — starting an online boutique from scratch with no outside funding and while living in different cities was challenging (Florida & Puerto Rico). We learned fast, wore many hats, and figured out remote teamwork and lean operations. It was hard work, but those struggles shaped the business and made every milestone feel worth it.

Understated E Boutique is our passion project — a side hustle that has grown into something deeply meaningful for both of us. We specialize in chic, versatile women’s clothing designed to make every woman feel confident and effortlessly stylish. Our focus is on quality, comfort, and timeless pieces that fit seamlessly into everyday life.
What makes our story unique is that we’ve built this boutique while managing full-time careers and family life. Jennifer runs a Medical Management and Billing company that serves clients in Puerto Rico and Florida, balancing a 40-hour workweek alongside the demands of entrepreneurship in the fashion industry. Melissa works full-time at Coca-Cola Puerto Rico while also dedicating her time and creativity to the boutique. Both of us are wives and mothers, which makes every accomplishment even more meaningful.
We’re proud of what we’ve built — not just a brand, but a community of women who support and inspire each other. What sets us apart is our authenticity, our commitment to empowering women through fashion, and the heart we put into every detail. Our dream is to continue growing Understated E Boutique and eventually open our own physical store, dedicating ourselves 100% to what we truly love.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson we’ve learned on this journey as business owners is the value of communication, genuine connection, and dedication. Strong communication — both between us as partners and with our customers — has been key to keeping everything running smoothly. Excellent customer service and building real connections with people have helped us grow a loyal community around our brand.
But above all, we’ve learned that no one will ever care about your business the way you do. When it’s your dream, you have to be present for everything — every detail, every challenge, every decision. The passion, love, and effort you put in are what truly make your business grow.
